National(s) Crisis

It’s hard to say good things about the Nationals. Last in the NL East, and 15 games back of the Mets. 23 games under .500.

But, hey, we won 2 of 3 from the Braves in Atlanta. And, Sunday’s win, much like Saturday’s, was proof that the Nationals do, in fact, have an offense that can produce some serious runs when the stars align. Unfortunately, most of the time, we’re in discord.

Meanwhile, most of the squad that took the field on opening night, or made names for themselves toward the end of last season, are on the DL, or are out for the season.

Dmitri Young is getting treatment for his diabetes, and is on the 15-day DL, effective the 18th of July. While the 15-day DL is where Dmitri is listed, it’s not likely he’ll be back in the first week of August, as he’s got some weight to lose, some conditioning to do, and some rehab assignments to tend to.

Meanwhile, Ryan Zimmerman’s rehab continues apace. He’s been at AAA-Columbus since Thursday, and went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI in today’s game.

Then there’s Nick Johnson. Man. You have to feel for this guy. He loses a whole season to a badly broken leg, sustained on the field for the Nats, and then comes back, only to tear a ligament in his wrist, and he’s done for the season.

That’s three pretty big names on the bench.

The Nats are off today, flying to California, where they’ll take two three-game series with the Giants and Dodgers. Fortunately for the Nats, both clubs are under .500. After the west coast adventures, it’s back to DC for two series against the Phillies and the Reds. Here’s hoping we can get back on track toward 82 & 82.

  1. When will Teddy ever win the President’s race at Nationals Stadium?

He is the real reason we all attend Nationals games, right?
