Social Calendar: July 24 – July 30

This week’s Calendar is prepared from a hotel room in California. Please forgive the brevity, and definitely chime in if you think I missed anything! Thanks!

Thursday, July 24: There is a lot going on tonight. Of all of it, though, I would probably pick Statehood at Fort Reno. It is the “night of a thousand cakes” – so bake something and celebrate the recent cancer freedom of singer Clark Sabine.

Friday, July 25: The Wasabassco Traveling Burlesque Revue makes a stop at Palace of Wonders. Go and find out if they can back up the claim of “another full evening of risqué-fun, saucy striptease, rat-pack style hosting, inebriated shenanigans, near-nekkidness, and the best Wasabi Hot Pepper Sauce on the eastern seaboard.”

Saturday, July 26: Listopad Vintage is having another of their lovely shopping parties at Red Onion in Adams Morgan. They have great taste in vintage clothing and accessories, and there will be wine and lemonade.

Sunday, July 27: Today is your last chance to sample the food and cocktails of Oyamel’s Squash Blossom Festival. Stuffed with goat cheese, caramelized with vanilla, or mixed in a glass with St. Germain, choices should be tasty and seasonal.

Monday, July 28: As a general rule, I simply do not care for the 9:30 Club. To my taste, the place is just too big, the scene not to my taste, etc. That said, as “over” as they may be at this point, I quite like MGMT and if you can find a ticket, they are probably the best thing in town.

Tuesday, July 29: Potentially trite statement: I just love Sonic Youth. I also find Thurston Moore charming and is sort of my role model for how I want to be at age 50. This evening Moore and co-author Byron Coley give a presentation at the Corcoran about their new book “No Wave: Post Punk. Underground. New York. 1976 – 1980.”

Wednesday, July 30: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi appears at Sixth and I Historic Synagogue in an event sponsored by Politcs & Prose to promote her new book “Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters”. (Fittingly, today is also my mom’s birthday.)

This column will be appearing every Thursday. Know of a great event that should be featured here? Leave a comment or email me at brittany [at] welovedc.com. I will not judge you for suggesting your own band and I will give you credit for your ideas (if you want it).
