Thursday, July 31The many photographers among you will likely enjoy this week’s Phillips Collection Artful Evening. Showcasing the current exhibition “Brett Weston: Out of the Shadow,” gallery talks at 6 and 7 will discuss the abstract, organic work of the noted photographer. The Collection continues the Artful Evenings series when it stays open until 8:30 on Thursday nights throughout August.

Friday, August 1: You probably already have tickets to see Bon Iver but will recommend something less Bob Boilen-y since tickets are long sold out. Try Liberation Dance Party at DC9. The long-running indie-pop-heavy night is probably the event of most-frequent “hey, I know this track!” outbursts, which is sometimes a good thing.

Saturday, August 2: You will hear more about them on the blog later, but the Re:Sounance djs spin records at Jimmy Valentines. I defy you to find fault with a night where the last set list included Fugazi, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and The Descendants. Certainly, no fault with the venue – it happens to be my third-favorite in town and bathed in a warm red glow of awesome.

Sunday, August 3: The MidCity retail and dining establishments put on their ninth-annual “Dog Days of Summer Sidewalk Sale.” on Saturday and Sunday. Places will be offering different incentives and discounts. One of the best deals is at Lettie Gooch Boutique, where everything in the shop will be 50% off (and they will be registering people to vote all day, too! go them!). There is also the sales tax holiday so you could be entitled to additional savings, depending on what you buy.

Monday, August 4: If you have yet to go through the Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future exhibit at the National Building Museum, you really should. Beautiful work, and the show closes at month’s end.

Tuesday, August 5: Surfing is an activity the D.C. area lacks, but to keep you in your “summer place” the Library of Congress holds the Summer Surfing film series. This week’s screening is “Big Wednesday,” a movie about surfing and the Vietnam War, starring Gary Busey.

Wednesday, August 6: The Arlington County Fair kicks off today. Just to make sure Arlington-dwellers remember they are still technically in the south/not “true” city dwellers, there will be pig races. Admittedly, the whole thing takes place in a rec center, and if you want a real fair experience you should pick the Howard County Fair instead… Still, famous racing pigs, accessible by metro.
