Cheap Ass Marriott Centerville

This weekend I am exiled to the Centerville Marriott for the wife’s work, and I would be a happy geek except for one small short detail.

This 4 Star hotel only offers 6 feet of Ethernet cable in its rooms. No Wifi, just a too short cable that I was the third person in line to complain about.

Marriott, do not be so cheap. If you cannot manage Wifi, at least give us 10 foot cords so we can hack from bed.

Married, mortgaged, and soon to be a father, Wayan Vota is in the fast lane to mid-life respectability – until the day his brood finds his intimate journal of global traveling and curses him with the ever-eternal reply “I’m gonna be just like you, Dad!”

  1. What self-respecting technology guy doesn’t carry an ethernet cable in their computer bag?

Why do all your posts seem to be just endless whining?

  2. So I do carry a Ethernet cable when I travel – to foreign countries. Is it too much to expect a hotel in the “Dulles Technology Corridor” to have accessible Internet?

  3. In all seriousness, we actually do take an Airport Express on every trip because we’ve found that “free high speed internet in room” usually just means “there’s an Ethernet jack,” and we’ve always got two laptops.

There are cheaper wifi devices, but we like the Express because it’s the size of a laptop power brick. :)

  4. We tried multiple devices as well, and the Airport won hands down. Easy to pack, light, and always works.

My number one reason for packing one is WiFi often charges you per computer – not per room – which is a pain if you want to add your iPhone or other device to the mix. The WiFi hub solves that problem nicely. Second reason is security – you can secure it so people can’t snoop on your traffic.
