Dreary Weekend Activities

Sunday Afternoon Rain by RSchley

Sunday Afternoon Rain by RSchley

Thursdays always make me think of Fridays, which make me think about my weekend plans. And this weekend is looking like it’s going to be a dreary one.

I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to motivate to get out of bed on days like today, when it’s chilly and steadily raining. So here are a list of activities for different levels of motivation this weekend, from “not leaving the house” to “rain? what rain?”

Level One: Not leaving your house. Ever.

– Do the chores you’ve been putting off. For example, finally switch over your summer clothes to your winter clothes
– Go comatose and watch daytime television. My suggestion? 101 Most Unforgettable SNL Moments airs on E! at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.
– Check out Comcast On Demand’s exercise TV programming so you don’t have to go to the gym. Fit TV has some excellent yoga programming (Zen in Your Den is my fave!) and also some silly exercise programming, like Flirty Girl’s Booty Beat (which I swear isn’t a porno in disguise, it’s a glutes workout!).

Level Two: Not leaving the neighborhood.

Starbucks has, once again, released their holiday drink line. (Hello, Gingerbread Latte! I missed you!) Go caffeinate. There is bound to be a Starbucks in your neighborhood.
– Go to the library. You’ve been meaning to do that. Go find yourself a book to cozy up to this winter, and it’s especially fun when the book is set in DC. My suggestions? Boomsday by Christopher Buckley (the Thank You For Smoking guy) is funny and dark. Sammy’s Hill and Sammy’s House are fun chick-lit reads by Kristin Gore (Al Gore’s daughter) set on the Capitol.

Level Three: A little rain never stopped me!

– Get out to FotoWeek/DC, just like Max told you to.
– If the weather turns around, the Sculpture Garden ice skating rink opens on November 15th, so strap on those skates and let’s go!
The Millenium Stage, the Kennedy Center’s free stage, is showing Mixed Magic Theater at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Mixed Magic is presenting The Moby Dick Project “a simultaneous telling of two stories that take place on the decks of the infamous Pequod. One story follows Ahab and his crew on the epic quest to kill the whale while the other is a modern tale of an inner-city youth gang led by a girl whose parents were killed in a drive-by shooting.”

Katie moved to DC in 2007, and has since embarked upon a love affair with the city. She’s an education reform advocate and communications professional during the day; at night and on the weekends, she’s an owner here at We Love DC. Katie has high goals to eat herself through the entire city, with only her running shoes to save her from herself. For up-to-the-minute news and reviews (among other musings), follow her on Twitter!
