Five Major Bridges Closed on Inauguration Day

Seriously, if you live in Virginia, forget about coming into the District on Inauguration Day. The Key, Memorial, Fourteenth and Roosevelt Bridges are all going to be closed on the 20th. In addition, the Chain Bridge is likely going to be closed, as well, as I’m betting money it can’t handle the overflow traffic.

If you’re playing along at home, that’s every major or minor crossing between Virginia and the District. Your only bet at that point is Metro. Which, I have already pointed out, will be over capacity that day.

Awesome.

I live and work in the District of Columbia. I write at We Love DC, a blog I helped start, I work at Technolutionary, a company I helped start, and I’m happy doing both. I enjoy watching baseball, cooking, and gardening. I grow a mean pepper, keep a clean scorebook, and wash the dishes when I’m done. Read Why I Love DC.

  2. Tom, was there mention of the bridges being closed to pedestrians as well? I’m relatively close to the Memorial Bridge and was hoping to use it to get into DC that day.

Maybe this is a sign that I am supposed to sleep in and enjoy the festivities from my couch.

  3. My Guess, Matt, is that there will be pedestrian traffic permitted, but not auto traffic. I’ll see what I can find in the reports about that, specifically.

  4. Thanks for the reply. Now that I’ve had some time to catch my breath at work this morning, the closings will only make that day crazier for us Arlington residents. I can see people, in an attempt to avoid Metro, trying to park and walk into DC. I need to find some knock-off Inauguration swank and set-up a booth. Anything from Official Inauguration Ponchos, black AND clear trash bags, to Official Inauguration Cameras, CVS brand disposable cameras with a limited hand-drawn Sharpie design, will be available.

Anyone else want in on this money-maker?

  5. Ugh, this is only going to make Rosslyn even more of a FUBAR mess than it usually is. I think I’ll take the following day off as well- I’m not big on the idea of having to fight my way through day-after touristy hordes to get to my office.
