Comedy in DC: Back with a Vengeance

My friends, our long local nightmare of not enough local comedy is over. It’s January, the holidays are over, and local comedy has reclaimed its rightful place in the back rooms, the lounges, and the bars of DC (except for Top Shelf. Solly’s gave their room slot away without even TELLING them. Dubya Tee Eff). As a result, I have not one but two comedy shows to tell you about this week.

Friday, you can dodge the tourists by catching Homegrown Comedy at the DC Improv. This month’s lineup features Andy Haynes, Marcus Brown, Mike Blejer, Kat Wilderotter, Jimmy Meritt, Kyle Martin, and Nick Mullen. I haven’t caught all of these comics, but Mike Blejer, Kat Wilderotter, and Jimmy Meritt are pretty consistently hilarious. Jay Hastings is hosting, and if you’re really lucky, he’ll tell you about the time he got high in a comedy club parking lot with his mom.

Next weekend, Aparna Nancherla is producing Sideshow at Playbill Cafe. Friday night is standup, featuring Aparna, Hampton Yount, Jake Young, Eli Sairs, Evan Valentine, and Mikael Johnson. If improv is more your thing, there are improv groups performing on Saturday night: Deuce, Horse & House, and Mythical Newsroom. Tickets are $5 at the door, and the show it as 8 both nights. It’s a solid lineup, but I don’t think I’ve publically declared the hilarity of Jake Young recently, so here it is: Oh my god, go laugh at Jake Young.

Comedy in DC runs every other Wednesday. You can send information about your upcoming comedy shows, and suggestions about where Top Shelf should move, to tiffany at we love dc dot com.
