No Ball? No Problem

Former WeLoveDC blogger (and currently preparing to make her way here from CA for next week’s festivities) Brittany hooked us up with a BYT event coming up that promises to be one heck of a party…but not a ball.

Brightest Young Things is having their “Inauguration Classic 2k9 Spectacular” on Tuesday evening at the Bohemian Caverns / LIV night club, located at 2001 11th and U St. NW. Party starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 4 a.m. That’s right – it starts early and goes all day long, celebrating in true BYT fashion.

They’re promising “Inaugural viewing, food, fun, games, happiness, general merriment and much rejoicing.” At 5 p.m. Tig Notaro from The Sarah Silverman Project kicks off a rocket-ride of live performances, featuring the likes of WALE, the Mathematicians, Fatback DJs, Art of Junk, the Buildings and more. (See their online flier for the full list of performers and specials.)

You have to secure tickets, but the souvenir glitter band gives you in and out access all day / night long, plus bag and coat check. Photo courtesy of

Sean Peoples, one of the Fatback DJs, took a few minutes to answer a couple of questions about the BYT event and another party people should check out.

Why this event as opposed to all the other things going on that night/weekend?

Good question – Honestly, we were thrilled to hear BYT was putting together an inauguration party since the election party they threw was so much fun. The Fatback DJs were there in November and then poured out onto U Street after the results came in. U Street was the epicenter and soul of DC that night. It seemed like the entire city was collectively celebrating there, and then, of course made a break for the White House soon thereafter. I think the U Street area is going to, once again, be the epicenter of celebration for DC. I wouldn’t want to miss being there to celebrate again!

What type of music should we expect from your set?

Fatback is all about the jams. So we’ll probably take it back and spin some funk, soul, go-go, and r&b. But the night wouldn’t be complete without a few Obama speech remixes. We’re busy searching for the best ones right now!

Who else on that marathon line-up are you really excited to see?

It’s going to be great to have all these local DC artists, DJs, and musicians in one place — definitely another reason this party is one of the best bets for inauguration weekend — but I’m really looking forward to Wale, who is becoming a DC hometown hero right now. True Womanhood is one of my favorite bands and we’re all really psyched for Art of Junk.

Are there any other awesome inauguration weekend events that we should know about?

Glad you asked, because Fatback, our monthly funk, soul, and r&b dance night is this Friday. We’re thinking of it as an inauguration kickoff event. We’re going late and have two floors of music. It’s starts at 10pm and goes LATE. At Red Lounge (2013 14th Street NW). There’s some great inaugural balls, but most are sold out by now… That’s why you should come out to Fatback. Free and fun!

A certified hockey fanatic, he spends some time debating the Washington Capitals club with friends – but everyone knows of his three decade love affair with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A professional writer, gamer, photographer, and Lego enthusiast, Ben remains captivated by DC and doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon.

  1. be careful about tig notaro. She’s mentally ill and can snap and remove you for no reason. If you question it she will do everything to make sure she looks like she had a reason. Caution!
