Foodie Round-Up (March 16-20)

I’m going to attempt to start an end-of-week or every-two-weeks foodie round up of all the news that’s fit to eat, so hang with me on my first installment, and tell me if you like it. Most of the foodie news that’s been coming my way this week has to do with wine, so let’s just start there.

Michel Richard’s Citronelle is getting a new sommelier with the appointment of Kathryn Morgan, a well known DC wine-o. Kathryn has made the rounds at Occidental Grill, Ristorante Tosca, and most recently 2941 Restaurant.

Proof is hosting Charles Smith, the Washington State-based winemaker best known for the celebrated Syrahs he produces at his cult Walla Walla winery, K Vintners.  This intimate wine dinner on March 25 will showcase several of Smith’s wines, and pair them with a special five-course menu designed by Chef Haidar Karoum. It’s going to set you back about $150. Thanks for WLDC reader Radman for the tip.

Taberna del Alabardero is celebrating its 20th Anniversary by offering more than 100 wines at retail cost in April, saving diners anywhere from $20 to $340 on Spain’s most distinguished wines. This deal kicks off on Friday the 27th and others like it will run throughout the year.

In non-wine related news:

Spring is in the air, as Equinox announces their Easter Brunch menu, which sounds might tasty. Main dishes include eggs chesapeake and a rockfish fillet. Brunch comes with a side of grits, which I bet from Chef Gray would be delectable. Jealous.

Quite possibly my favorite news of this round-up, and thrifty deal if I ever heard one:

Sunday through Friday, Jaleo, Oyamel, and Zaytinya are offering $4 specialty cocktails and beer and $4 appetizing small plates as well as discounted wines by the glass. Each place is working it with some tantalizing specials, like Oyamel’s Tinga poblana (stew of shredded chicken with potatoes, chorizo, and chipotle, topped with white onion) or my favorite dish at Jaleo, the  Gambas al ajillo, shrimp sautéed with garlic and guindilla pepper.

Thus ends my first attempt at small bits, I suppose it would be cuter if I called them small plates, or tapas, but I’ll work on a clever title later. Do you know of some foodie news that I ought to share? Please email it to me at Katie (at) WeLoveDC.com. Plus, a heads up to our flickrattzi, in case you’re looking for a new weekend photo shoot subject – I’m in need of some new wine and food pictures! Submit them to our WeLoveDC pool on flickr, and maybe you’ll lead my next Foodie Round-Up!
