DCKickball: Resistance is Futile

I have a confession to make: I am now a member of a DCKickball team. Further disclosure: It’s actually really fun. Even so, reservations remain when it comes to participating in this particular DC ritual, stereotyped as a perennial  pastime for shameless district yuppies/drunkards/bros. I imagined the league would be a fratastic bro-fest and signed up steeled with my shield of pseudo-hipster irony. (So it goes.)

DCKickball’s Constitution Division Scrimmages marked our team’s first foray into the sport since the playground days. Back in those days, I used to jack the ball up against the convent walls across from my elementary school, so as usual when it comes to sporty things, I was feeling over-confident.  Turns out that playing kickball now takes some practice. Also, the regulation ball is roughly the size of a large beach ball and extremely difficult to field/catch.

It definitely helped that it was a gorgeous day on the Mall under the sun, and that our team is chill and not there for world kickball domination. And we haven’t gotten to the epic and infamous flip-cup part of the bargain yet, however, so stay tuned…

Acacia has lived in DC since graduating from Vassar College with degrees in English and Italian. She cries daily at the thought of her imminent departure from this beloved city, as she will begin a Fulbright teaching grant in the Campania region, Italy come October. She’ll be blogging that experience too. Get at her: acaciaO@welovedc.com or follow her on twitter.

  1. Keep the toe down and drive that ball. In the field use those Keeper skills to catch with the hands. And remember, Sr. Mary Catherine is watching!!
