Carl: Since Mother Weaver is coming to town on Friday, I plan to entertain her by taking her to see the lazy-ass welfare pandas, perhaps a concert at Millennium Stage, and definitely a visit to Ted Kennedy’s grave, not that it is entertaining, but it would be a meaningful visit. In the evening on Saturday Mom will enjoy a trip to Science Club for some $4 PBRs. On Sunday we will get up early and do some kayaking at Great Falls before I take her back to the airport. She may have other plans, but as long as she is staying under my roof, she will do what I say. How’s it feel now that the tables are turned, Mom?

Donna: With the weather this great, I’ll be outside as much as possible–on the deck, on the trails, and at the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival in the Plains. This shindig includes Celtic crafts, bridies (see, I used Wikipedia as a source) and caber tossing, which my friend Cat describes as big hairy men tossing telephone poles end over end. I’ll be lobbying to stay for the Saturday night concert with the Glengarry Bhoys. Having just returned from a couple days in the Rockies and still hankering for good beer, I’m also hoping to head for the patio of Fireflies in Del Ray,  which carries a few Colorado microbrews like the rich and sweet Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. Mmm, mmm good!

Rebecca: I’ve been out of town for the last four weekends, so I’m ALL about chilling out in DC.  Friday I’ll check out the movies at Bethesda Row. With all the summer blockbusters, it’s time to catch an off-beat, foreign flick.  If you haven’t caught the fever, it’s College Football season, so my Saturday’s will now be dedicated to cheering on Mizzou and Notre Dame.  If you’re interested in local college teams: UMD plays Cal at 10pm and Georgetown takes on Holy Cross.  Sunday I’ll mosey on down to the U.S. Capitol’s West Lawn for the NSO’s FREE Labor Day concert.  Must remember to bring a picnic, blanket and some candles. All I can say is “Thank God Monday is a National Holiday!” Sleeping in late. That’s my plan.

Paulo: I’m out of town for the long weekend, hopefully kayaking somewhere in New Jersey. Now, were I to go kayaking around here, I’d drop by Thompson Boat Center, rent a kayak for the day, and see if I can row it into the marsh at Theodore Roosevelt Island. I’ve seen it done; two canoers went right under the marsh bridge.

BenR: Me and the missus are doing a staycation to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary; we’ll be checking out Hotel Helix and enjoying the fantastic atmosphere and setting at Plume for dinner. Being avid photogs, we’ll be checking out National Geographic’s Kodachrome exhibit as well.  We’ll be driving into town, what with Metro’s chicanery; I suggest you do the same. My favorite aunt is finally flying up to visit and we’ll be whisking her around the city at night to all the monuments, which is cheaper than the Monuments at Night tour. I’m sure cooking by fire is involved somewhere among the three days and we’ll be most glad to wave bye-bye to summer.

Kirk: This Saturday, I’ll be attending the Old Ebitt Block Party (thanks Katie) at which I’ll mostly be stuffing my face with their famous crab cakes. I’ll likely spend my Sunday afternoon strolling around Del Ray in Alexandria, snacking on custard from the Dairy Godmother and coveting expensive cheeses at Cheesetique.  I’ll cap it all off with the aforementioned NSO Free Concert and a lazy Monday. OH, AND FOOTBALL!!!!!!

Shannon: I’m heading to the beach this weekend to enjoy the last weekend of summer, and honestly, I’m relieved that I don’t have to deal with Metro craziness here.  But I’m sad to miss out on the last weekend of the Maryland State Fair, which has everything from a kids tractor pull to cow milking lessons to a birthing center.  And I’ve got a Groupon that entitles me to crepes and Belgian beer at L’Enfant Cafe, so I can’t wait to use that.  If you’re in town, be sure to take advantage of the last weekend of DC’s free outdoor pools— the only swimming pools that will be open after Labor Day are the Capitol Skyline Hotel‘s pool (rumor has it that the outdoor pool parties will continue through September), the city’s indoor pools, and the heated outdoor pool (thanks to triathlete Mayor Fenty) at Hains Point.

Katie: I’m up for a low-key celebration of summer this weekend, so you’ll find me outside. (Though, that seems to be the theme of my weekends always, but still.) I’ll probably lace up my shoes for a run on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail since this is the absolute perfect running weather. I’ll also probably stop by CommonWealth Gastropub for the super cheap $12 deal. I’m totally distraught that my tan has already started fading, so we’re going into sun overload. I’m going to drink up all the vitamin D I can get this weekend, which means significant time will be spent at Labor Day pool parties and barbecues, just as it should be.

Jasmine: Seeing as I’ll be cut off from DC proper thanks to the Metro outages, I thought I would take that opportunity for some rest and relaxation in the ‘burbs and beyond. I have a friend coming to visit for labor day weekend, so I think I’m going to take her toJackson 20 in Old Town Alexandria, a day trip to enjoy the weather at Mt. Vernon, and possibly spend Sunday afternoon out at beautiful Breaux Vineyards, which is only about an hour away.

Corinne: Yeeha for long weekends! Saturday I’ll head to the bonnie, rolling hills of The Plains where the Virginia Scottish Games will give me a fix of greasy yet delightful haggis (just don’t think too much about what’s in there), tartan kilts, springy Highland flingers, dancing fiddles and, with any kind of luck, some Galaxy chocolate (mmm did someone say Minstrels?). Sunday means pool parties and birthday celebrations on H Street NE (I’m always up for sushi and tots at Sticky Rice, and I’ve still yet to play a round of mini-golf at H Street Country Club. Monday I’ll pretend I’m at the beach by sticking close to the water, perhaps with a tropical drink at Cantina Marina, a wander around the Southwest Fish Market or a hike out at Great Falls.

Cathy: After an inspiring happy hour with local food bloggers, I’m likely to be at Eastern Market, the Dupont Farmers’ Market, theDel Ray Farmers’ Market AND the Old Town Farmers’ Market. When I’m not out gathering ingredients, I’ll be reading up on all the new foodie blogs. Tomorrow night, I’m grabbing dinner and a $4.95 pitcher of sangria during the final days of Nando’s Peri-Peri’s happy hour special, and I’m debating seeing the final Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival movie of the season, Ferris Bueller!! Monday, I am paying back society with a scheduled visit to the incredible local food kitchen, Miriam’s Kitchen.

Tom: Ohhh weekend.  Coming back after vacation has been very stressful, so this is a weekend of unwinding.  Friday night will be a trip out to the ballpark for Roberto Clemente Day and hopefully a return to the Nationals’ winning ways.  Sure they’re out of the playoff picture, formally, but it’s still a great place to go hang out for an evening.  Saturday will be filled with farm labor and card sharpery, with grilling of fine meats.  But this is a three day weekend, folks, more plans must be had!  How about the Scottish Games in The Plains, VA this weekend?  And then Monday shall be spent in support of the only worthy labor: drinking 21st Amendment’s Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer and cooking with fire.

Tiff: Y’all, it is the weekend I have been waiting for. Pancakes & Potatoes at Great Country Farm. Nothing like eating one delicious breakfast food and then acquiring fresh potatoes to be used in the creation of another (homemade hashbrowns are the BEST!) Since I’m off work next week, I’m also plotting some other culinary projects. So you might catch me at the Courthouse Farmers Market buying a whole mess of tomatoes. Or apples. Or… well, I just don’t know. So you might also catch me at a liquor store, trying to forget my kitchen disaster.

  1. If anyone’s up for a big night of dancing, FatbackDC is throwing a huge party at 9:30 Club, called the THE VERY BIG FATBACK! Go-go legends Trouble Funk and afro-cuban-electro purveyors Chico Mann will be performing live as well. $10 to change your life!

  2. Next weekend there are so many free events going on–I’m excited for “Opera in the Outfield,” on Sept. 12. Washington National Opera and the Washington Nationals are hosting a simulcast of “The Barber of Seville” for FREE in Nationals stadium. You can sit in the stands or picnic on the lawn, all of the normal concessions stands are open, and there are going to be activities and giveaways starting at 5:30. All of the info is on the WNO website. Plus there’s the Kennedy Center Open House earlier that day. Can’t Wait!!
