Food Aromas of DC

What is it about walking cities and the various food aromas wafting around?

Growing up on the Upper West Side of New York City, it was the smell of freshly baked and doughy H&H Bagels. In highschool at soccer practice, the ladyfingers and swiss fudge cookies of nearby Stella D’oro made my mouth water during drills.  In Baltimore’s Fells Points area, it’s the bread baking at H&S Bakery.

And in DC, for me it’s the smell of bacon cooking in the early morning along M Street.

What are the food aromas you associated with our Nation’s Capital?

  1. el pollo rico (you can smell it from blocks away)
the woodburning oven smell at two amys
the smell of thousands of burgers being cooked along wilson blvd on monday nights (i believe there is an arlington county law that all restaurants on wilson must have ‘burger night’ on monday nights).

  2. i walk home along 17th st. in dupont every day and it’s pretty brutal if i’m hungry — i can smell burgers from jack’s, seafood from hank’s oyster bar, then of course the unmistakable mcdonalds fries smell…

  3. for me it’s about my commute into work: the smell of donuts coming from Heller’s Bakery going to the Metro, and the smell of the half-smokes emanating from the food cart outside the Metro when I exit.

  4. I cook bacon on M street every morning (in my own house, not a restaurant). I am not sure where you are but I like to think I contribute to that lovely aroma.
