@Donna, a central vacuuming system was common in hotels built in that era, as well. In this particular case, it’s what you get when you build an elevator shaft in your home, but refuse to fill it with a working elevator for fear that people think you are weak, then take the stairs until your death at the ripe age of 102. The vacuuming system sucks all the gunk from each floor into a collection area in the basement. Genius! If only I had more than one floor in my apartment…

I worked here years ago doing programs for young girls. It is an amazing house. The basement breakfast room is ridiculously intricate. I loved every moment I spent there and recommend visiting it.
