We Love Weekends, November 21-22

This is a tough weekend. Either you’re on the treadmill running a mini-marathon trying to offset the impending turkey day feeding frenzy or you’re trying to figure out what to pack for the trip. Some of us oh-so-fortunate folks are hosting out families.

What’s the appropriate font to use for excessive sarcasm?

That aside, some of us are finding time to squeeze some fun in. Here’s what we’ve got going on this weekend. Share your plans with us in the comments.

Cathy: This Saturday, while the weather’s still great, I’m going to tear up some trails in VA. I’ll do double duty in Luray by checking out the Luray Caverns as well as hiking in the Shenandoah National Park. I’m aiming for the Big Devils Stairs. Hope they live up the hype (well, just that they actually resemble large satanic-looking rock-formed steps). Sunday will be spent watching football through my eyelids, cooking Kirk’s almost-famous chili, and going on a long run around the Mall to stave off what I can already tell is going to be a jolly (and artery-clogging) holiday season.

Katie: This weekend I’m going on a staycation. Heck yeah I am, because I, Katie Food Blogger, deserve a vacation yet cannot afford it or get the time off work for it. So I’m going to staycation my tookus off by doing what I do best – going out 66. A friend and I are going to the outlets in Leesburg on a shopapalooza since my obsession with Ann Taylor has reached a new high, and who doesn’t need more J.Crew? Everyone needs more J. Crew. We’ll also probably stop by a few wineries, because you guys know that’s basically all I do on the weekends. Sunday I’m hosting a pre-thanksgiving thanksgiving for my friends and cooking the hell out of a Smith Meadows Farm turkey. I’ve been giving it evil looks daily just so it knows who’s boss.

Tom: We’re out of town this weekend, but were we here I’m thinking that it’s probably past time that I hit up Againn on New York Ave for some of their bangers and mash.  Yes, it’s $22, but they buy the whole pig and make their own sausage and bacon, so it’s probably worth it, right?  Couple that with the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at NatGeo and that’s a pretty interesting evening on the town, isn’t it?   Sunday would likely find us at Mister Days for some football, very probably to root on my beloved 49ers.

Rachel: This weekend I’m re-living my college glory days by going to a friends apartment and doing all of the things we loved to do — Rock Band, Guitar Hero, pizza, and a serious movie marathon. The Back to the Future trilogy will be the main feature of the day because really … who DOESN’T love Michael J. Fox in tight jeans playing Johnny B. Good while on the brink of being erased from history all together? Mix that up with some Mississippi Queen by Mountain and a few Beatles classics via the good old XBOX 360 Live and you’ve got yourself the best of the best when it comes to re-living college. Well — that plus a few cheap beers. Then you’ve truly got it all.

Jasmine: This weekend is hipster-bar-a-palooza for me. Friday night I’m heading over to Galaxy Hut in Clarendon to play some table Pac-man and drink some delicious beers, then Saturday I might revisit Atomic Billiards, with their pool tables and board games (just noticed the space-themed name + games seems to be a thing. Huh.). Black Cat is also having not one but two dance parties on Saturday night, plus their downstairs bar is always a hipsterific good time. Then on Sunday, I’m looking forward to seeing 2012 for two hours of fantastic apocalyptic disaster-splosions. Woo!

Jenn: I have GOT to relax. All this burning-the-candle-at-both-ends stuff is getting old. Or, I am. If I were a Beaujolais Nouveau girl (which I’m not), I’d start the weekend early and hit the annual release madness tonight at Bistrot du Coin, as le beaujolais est arrivee at midnight or however you say it. But this weekend is not about boozing for me, instead it’s all about conspicious consumption, where I head up to Friendship Heights and hit every store I can – from Neiman-Bloomies-L&T to TJ Maxx-Loehmann’s-Filene’s – in search of the ultimate holiday party wardrobe. Oh yes, the smell of burning plastic will be in the air.

Rebecca: Per my Tuesday Daily Feed item, I’ll be spending my Friday night getting my Twilight on at a showing of New Moon. After all that angst and heavy breathing, I’ll probably just head home to recoup, and prep myself for some serious shopping at the Leesburg outlets. Shopping is tiring man! Clothes on, clothes off, clothes on, clothes off.  That’s like 3,000 calories. Sunday, I’ll be watching my NYC Giants take on the Falcons and hoping they recover from their current losing streak.

Donna: As part of some R&R this weekend, I am finally going to see Julie & Julia; I think I’ll relate to Julie’s blogging as well as her kitchen catastrophes. I’d also like to stroll through the  Tibetan Market put on by the nonprofit Machik, and to check out their dance lessons.

Corinne: My weekend so far consists of many maybe plans. Friday night seems like a good time to finally head to The Black Rooster Pub, recently reopened thanks to the cries of its loyal fans. There are some concerts I’d like to catch: Umphrey’s McGee at 9:30 Club and bachata group Aventura, who will bring their Latin flavor to the Patriot Center Sunday night. I’ll also aim for the “Big Easy” brunch at Acadiana before taking in Show Boat at Signature Theatre. As they say in the UK, roll on, weekend!

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
