Mentors Needed to “Green” Girl Scouts

Spiffy uniforms aren’t the only thing green about the Girl Scouts these days. These kids are out to make the planet a better place, and not just by selling those scrumptious Thin Mints.

Scouts in our area are taking on “Forever Green” Community Action Projects to green their schools and communities, and they’re looking for mentors. If you’re willing to give advice on a variety of environmental projects — composting lunch food, creating green spaces, and the like — let them know.

The time commitment is minimal — only two meetings, plus e-mails and phone calls — for projects that wrap up by June. Who knows, maybe they’ll even give you a badge.

An area resident since 1997, Donna C. is a DC outsider. When she’s not running her writing and Web business, she’s running around the city, exploring the great outdoors, or trying to figure out how best to go green. See why she loves DC.

  1. I think this seems like a great project. I can only add that I had a terrible personal experience attempting to volunteer with the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital – the very Girl Scout Council of which I had been a brownie & girl scout in my girlhood (dorky, perhaps, but true!)

After getting an email looking for women to participate in various projects, I said “sure!” – After that, I was never assigned to a project, and nobody responded to repeated emails and calls saying “hey, I’M the one offering to help YOU here…” Finally, I gave up and asked to just be taken off the list – a request they never complied with and instead just increased the rate of spam until I blocked them.

Volunteer management is not an easy thing, I understand, but it seemed disrespectful. How hard should I really have to work in order to do some fun volunteer work with the girl scouts?
