We Love Weekends: December 4-6

Another week, another weekend. Thank goodness it works out that way. [Insert your winter holiday of choice here] is closing in, so this might be the last weekend you get to yourself, free of obligations or shopping or drunk uncle Charlie sharing family history you’d have been happier not knowing. I refuse to believe aunt Jane would do such a thing, brown acid or not, Chuck.

Here’s what we few, we happy few, we band of brothers and sisters, will be up to this weekend.

Max: Friday night I’ll be headed over to Reyes + Davis gallery to see Fine Lines, a drawing exhibition featuring one of my favorite local artists, Kate McGraw.  Afterward I’ll be strolling over to Flashpoint to check out Disco Pigs, a play about “two inseparable violent creatures, who have developed their own language from birth”.  Well that should be interesting, hmmmm?  On Saturday I might head up to the closing party for Portrait 2.0 to hang out with some of my photography buddies, that is if I can get motivated to trek up to Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring.  Sunday I am determined to see a movie, relax, and get ready for another fun filled week at work.

Kirk:  This Saturday, I’mma go to Black Cat to see the Big Pink, a concert that I’ve been looking forward to for months.  Then, I’ve got some NYC friends busing in on Sunday to see DC for the first time.  I’m going to try to take them off the beaten path a bit and show them around the prettier neighborhoods in the city.  Then, we’ll do a whirlwind tour of the monuments at night (honestly, the only time to see them) followed by an introduction to our superior craft cocktail scene.  Should be fun. If anyone has any suggestions for where to take these NYC types, I’d appreciate your comments.

Katie: Saturday I’ll probably head over to the Court House farmer’s market, since it’s been gloriously defiant and stays open all year round. Even if most of the produce is gone, I can still grab meat, pasta, cheese, milk, eggs and sauces from local producers, and that’s more than enough to keep me happy. Saturday night I’ll be heading to the DC Craft Bartenders Guild Repeal Day Ball, and partaking in at least one cocktail too many. Sunday will be spent recovering, and then pulling myself out of bed for dinner with friends.

Tom: Saturday, I’ll be overseeing a power-on event for a client.  Did you know that every office building in DC must disconnect their main power once every two years for an inspection? Yeah, it’s all kinds of fun for those of us tech guys who have to stay late on Friday and come in early Saturday.  Good times.  Afterwards, I’m thinking that some brunch is in order, very probably a stop at the ever-popular Boulevard Woodgrill in Arlington.  Saturday night, I’ll be seeing the Echos concert in Alexandria.  They’re doing the Biebl Ave Maria (TTBB/TTB) and Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium which pretty much melts my icy heart every time I hear it. Sunday, we’ve got dinner with good friends, and very probably a nice trip to a farmers market.

Rebecca:  Last year, I was fortunate enough to see The Joffrey Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center, which was fabulous. This year and this Friday, I’ll be checking out The Washington Ballet’s performance of Septime Webre’s The Nutcracker at THEARC. In this version, George Washington stars as the Nutcracker and England’s King George III as the villainous Rat King. Should be a delightful Washington, DC spin on the classic. Saturday, there’s wonderful, seasonal fun to be had in Georgetown all day, in particular, I’ll be checking out Book Hill. Saturday evening I’ll have my eyes on the Big 12 Championship showdown between Texas and Nebraska. Go Cornhuskers! Go Big 12 North! Sunday, I managed to score some Redskins tickets, and luckily they’re playing the undefeated Saints, so at worst I see the possible 2009 Superbowl Champs and a glimpse of former Mizzou QB Chase Daniel (and hottie Drew Brees) and at best I see the Skins pull off the biggest upset of all time.  Hope the weather is good.

Corinne: This weekend is looking packed, and I can’t wait. With family still in town from Seattle, we’ll relish another weekend together starting with dinner Friday at Zaytinya and then drinks somewhere in my ‘hood like cozy Stoney’s (or the new Ghana Cafe, if it would just go ahead and open already!) . Saturday morning my family, who knows my passion for all things Scottish or even quasi-Scottish, will indulge me by heading to Alexandria’s annual Christmas Walk followed by a visit to National Harbor. While there, we’ll put on our puffy coats and brave the nine degree temps of ICE!, an interactive exhibit made of 1.5 million pounds of, yup, you got it…ice. Sunday means meeting up with some friends for a birthday brunch at Marvin’s and then a different evening gathering, this time revolving around comfort foods, a classic film and a valiant try at making Sunday nights just a little more fun.

Jenn: It’s ten days out from my very first bellydance performance, as part of Saffron Dance’s “Spice of Life” event next Saturday, December 12. Yikes. This means the majority of this weekend will be devoted to practice, practice and more practice. I’ll come up for air Saturday night to celebrate the 76th Anniversary of Prohibition’s end at the DC Craft Bartenders Guild Repeal Day Ball. I’ll be in a wine-colored dress, say hi if you are there. If I weren’t attending the ball that night, I would definitely be at Dana Ellyn’s opening at Evolve for “Divinely Irreverent” (which I’m getting a sneak peek of earlier and will report back next week). Her new paintings look amazing and subversive, which is just what I like.

Rachel: Saturday’s the first day I’ve had to breathe since my big move from one apartment in my building to another this week. I’m thinking of some serious unpacking, Chinese takeout, and season 4 of Saved By The Bell on DVD. There’s a chance I might let loose and head to Atomic Billiards this weekend since I can’t even remember the last time I used my shuffle board skills against my friends. Sunday most likely includes more unpacking with a little bit of relaxation, ending with a evening stroll to the Starbucks nearby. There’s just something about taking a walk at dusk with a hot chocolate in hand that really gets you feeling like it’s “winter”. There might not be snow yet, but here’s to hoping!

Carl: Friday night I will be painting the town red by trying out some of those hushpuppies Katie loved at Sou’Wester. Saturday I have a meeting in the afternoon, but not before I can get my hands on some durian at the Eden Center. Later in the afternoon I will be seeing the Terracotta Warriors at the National Geographic Museum. On Sunday I am going to have breakfast at a Masonic lodge and then spend the day with my very lovely wife, who I am slowly but surely training to call me “Big Daddy.”

Don: This weekend will mostly be spent compensating for the last few. De-cluttering and restocking the fridge after all those Thanksgiving guests and then coping with this year’s christmas tree. Personally I’m ambivalent about live trees but my darling wife is stridently anti-plastic. So for the third year in a row we went out and cut down our own. You need to be willing to wander around looking for Your Tree, and then schlep the thing a distance that didn’t seem so long when you wandered out there. But that was when you were without thirty pounds of tree on your shoulder, wasn’t it now? Strength training aside, the process is fun and the fact that it isn’t a week or more out of the ground when you get it makes for a longer-lasting tree. It’s cheaper, to boot. The only downside is it’s a longish drive out into Maryland or Virginia.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
