We Love Weekends, December 25-26

Happy Holidays, everyone. Here’s how we’re spending the holiday weekend. Let us know what you’re up to in the comments.

Tiff: Like many of you, I’ll be spending a good chunk of the weekend out of town visiting family, but there are two things I’m looking forward to doing here in DC with the rest of my off-time. I’ll be catching Matt Kazam at the DC Improv on Sunday, and since my office is closed Monday, I might go check out ICE with the ticket I got as a gift from the company.

Rachel: This is my first holiday season not being spent in Chicago. Since I can’t be around my family, I’m spending my time in Alexandria with a close one’s family and his two pets. I — like many of the fellow Jews I know — enjoy seeing movies on Christmas Day. This year, I’m hoping to go see that new Sherlock Holmes flick because what could be better than Jude Law … right? I’m also planning on recording a few new songs I’ve written to close out the new year and just sitting by the fire.

Katie: Ok, so here’s the thing. I live for after-Christmas sales. (I live for all shopping, but nothing tops the slash markdowns of the good post-Christmas saleapalooza.) So my holiday weekend will be spent shopping off all 85 bajillion pounds I’ve gained this season. I, for one, do not enjoy the mall, so my bargain hunting would be done on Connecticut Avenue and in Penn Quarter. The other thing about the holidays that I’ll miss is Christmas lights, and nothing is more festive to me than King Street in Old Town during the holidays. I’d probably head over to The Majestic or Vermillion for a few drinks and take a snowy stroll down Alexandria’s main drag.

Carl: For me this year’s Christmas will include the traditional Chinese dinner and a movie afterward. The streets should be quiet enough to have a nice stroll, even if the rain does hamper the festivities a bit. If nothing else I hope to visit the lazy-ass Christmas pandas one last time before they feed little Butterstick to the llamas. The rest of the weekend will be reserved for throwing elbows to get to the good sales at Pentagon City Mall. You want that pair of Jimmy Choos? You will have to talk to Big Daddy first.

Rebecca: I’ll be headed to Charm City for the holiday and weekend.  My family and I will be helping pack grocery bags for Movable Feast, which provides food to sick Baltimore residents. The rest of the holidays will be spent watching the NCAA Football College Bowls, trying not to eat myself into oblivion and possibly checking out some of the post holiday sales.

Don: Most of my holiday weekend will probably be watching my darling wife enjoy her gift, [REDACTED]. (Can you hear her teeth grinding as she reads this? She hates surprises…) If I can pry her away from [REDACTED] we’ll venture out, my in-laws in tow, and catch a Christmas Day showing of Young Frankenstein. Unlike our past and future winners of our contest, we actually had to pay for tickets. It’ll be well worth it a gift for my darling wife’s mother, though, so long as she doesn’t read this. Other than that and [REDACTED] the only other thing on my radar is a possible visit to ICE! over at National Harbor. While the price seems a wee steep to see what I have far too much of outside my front door, at least there it’s in pretty shapes.

Tom: We’re headed up to Pittsburgh this weekend for the holiday, probably singing Christmas At Ground Zero the whole way up, as we sit in endless traffic.  We’ll return home to our kitties Sunday, when we’ll head out to the Improv to see Matt Kazam headline, and then perhaps a nightcap of that amazing nocino at Room 11.  I know a celebratory dinner is in the works for Tiff, as well, to celebrate her promotion.  Perhaps we’ll head to Ray’s!

John: Heading down to the Colonial Triangle for the Holiday, where I’ll be hitting the student-less William & Mary bars once cabin fever sets in. Coming back on Sunday and hopefully checking out the Phillips Collection’s Man Ray exhibit. That and LOTS of cardio to work off what I’m about to eat.

Corinne: I will be crossing the bridge into Virginia for some cozy home-time with the family and friends, and I can’t wait to take a breather after a hectic but awesome December. I’m sure we’ll also venture downtown—perhaps for a Christmas Eve service at National Cathedral or to experience the  “Norwegian Christmas” display that’s currently enlivening Union Station’s gorgeous atrium. I’m also always up for a movie at subterranean E Street Cinema, where I might just bump into several friends celebrating their “Jewish Christmas” traditions this holiday weekend!
