Here at We Love DC, we love DC-themed art. From houses full of District maps to locally-made DC t-shirts, we like to decorate with things that feature our wonderful city.  So it’s no surprise that we’re big fans of Amtrak’s city-themed posters–they’re colorful, well-designed, and cheap (only $5!).

We’re giving away an Acela Express DC Poster that features the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Capitol Building to a randomly selected commenter.  If you’d like to enter, just leave a comment here (include your e-mail so we can contact you) telling us where you’d like to take Amtrak.  We’ll randomly choose a commenter at noon on Thursday.

My ideal Amtrak trip?  I’d love to escape the snow and take the Palmetto route down to Miami.

Shannon grew up in the greater DC area/Maryland suburbs, went to Virginia for college and grad school (go Hoos!), and settled in DC in 2006. She’s an urban planner who loves transit (why yes, that is her dressed as a Metro pylon for Halloween), cities, and all things DC. Email her at Shannon (at) WeLoveDC.com!

  1. I’d love to take the Amtrak to New York whenever I’d like but it’s way too expensive! Usually it’s cheaper to grab a bus and deal with the traffic on I-95!

  2. I’d love to take Amtrak from Chicago to Seattle on the Empire Builder, and then down the western seaboard to San Francisco and on to LA on the Coast Starlight.

  3. Washington, D.C.
“It ain’t no famous name on a golden plaque
That keeps me that makes me ride that railroad track
It’s my baby’s kiss that keeps me coming back.”

  4. I really wanted (and still want) to take Amtrak to my friend’s wedding in Texas. Would have put us right in the center of town, instead of having to drive from Austin. The route followed the old Texas joke: “Go east till you smell it, go south until you step in it.”

  5. I’d like to take Amtrak to New Orleans… Mardi Gras may be over but I’m sure the party’s still going.

  6. I’d love to take Amtrak cross-country and see the United States on the ground level rather than flying over. Taka train to Seattle, then down the West Coast and then back through the desert SouthWest and Texas

  7. I want to take The Carolinean to New York (again!). The Carolinean offers business class and a great schedule from North Carolina.

  8. I’ve taken CZ twice, and this past summer took southwest chief and coastline from SF to LA. this coming summer I hope to do the northern loop- CZ to oak up to seattle, back on empire. Then after that the LA-louisana route.. travelling on amtrak is half the vacation- and I plan it to be that way!

  9. I’d love to take the Empire Builder out to Glacier this summer for some backpacking; but the Starlight would be pretty sweet too (especially with the new wine-tasting cars I’ve heard about)

  10. I once took a now defunct line out to Idaho for a spectacular trip to Yellowstone. Such a great way to travel – especially out west were you can sit in those Viewliner cars and stare out at those impressive vistas. Can’t wait to see how all the new federal rail funding works out.

  11. I’d like to take a cross-country trip on Amtrak from Chicago out to the west coast, complete with a sleeper car.

  12. I love the nostalgia of riding trains. Taking the Acela to New York always adds a little fun to business trips and I can’t wait for the free Wi-Fi to kick off in March. Walking into D.C.’s Union station always feels like a step back in time – sounds cheesy, but it’s true.

  13. I’d like to take Amtrak to Georgia. I’ve been to every state surrounding GA but never made it in. Does Amtrak even go there?

  14. I take Amtrak from Alexandria to Richmond a lot. It’s easier than driving, especially if I leave during rush hour, and I can work if I need to while in transit.

  15. I just asked random.org to choose a number between 1 and 69 and it gave me 60. So congratulations to Gwennyth, who thinks that half the vacation should be Amtrak. Thanks for your great comments everyone, and Gwennyth, I’ll be in touch about getting you the poster.
