We Love Music: March Music Preview

Ticket prices for chart-topping acts who headline the big award shows are expensive. Not to mention the fact that tour stops at gigantic commercial venues like the Verizon Center take all the fun out of what a concert is supposed to be — an opportunity to hear quality live music. Sure, there are exceptions to the rule (like Muse at the Patriot Center last week), but whatever happened to showing the homegrown groups some sweet, sweet lovin’ by attending their hometown gigs? We’ve got 5 shows slated in March that deserve an audience. So spring something new on yourself this month  and check ’em out.

March 11

Kalob Griffin Band

The Red and The Black, w/ Midnight Wine + Pearl and the Bear, 9 pm

If you’re into roots-based blends of folk, blues and rock, the Kalob Griffin Band can get you your fix of Wilco meets Ryan Adams meets Neil Young alt-country goodness.

March 13

Here We Go Magic

Rock & Roll Hotel, 8 pm

Here We Go Magic have played the festival circuit main stage and are about to release their second album. They’ve come a long way since recording tracks in a basement just two years ago.

March 19

Taylor Carson

Ebeneezer’s Coffee House, 7:30 pm

Nothing says intimate like an evening spent with a singer-songwriter live at a small, dimly lit venue. Join Taylor Carson for his album release party to hear heartfelt tunes from a man with nothing than a guitar.

March 23

GroundScore

Asylum, 9 pm

Feel like chilling out and having a drink? Local Reggae Rockers GroundScore take the stage at Asylum in Adams Morgan for a night of drinks and tunes reminiscent of Sublime circa 1992.

March 30

Pink Jams Breast Cancer Benefit f/ The Very Small, Dreamscapes Project & Momentary Prophets

Jammin’ Java, 10 pm

Supporting a good cause is always a valid excuse for a night of live music. Take the trip to Vienna’s Jammin’ Java for this benefit show featuring three acts from around the DC metropolitan area.

  1. Thanks Rachel!

Some cool stuff you mention here.

And here’s a plug for lots of great new jazz coming into DC later this month. This weekend, Bohemian Caverns hosts young piano phenom Robert Glasper. (His version of Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” is killing!) He also collaborated with Kanye West and music directed for Mos Def, so his stuff is hip and contemporary within a jazz trio context.

Also, great drummer Allison Miller (Ani DiFranco) brings her new sick band Boom Tic Boom to Bossa on March 21.

And a sentimental old fave of mine, Jonatha Brooke – not jazz, but one of the best, most musical-yet-unheralded songwriters out there today – coming to Birchmere with also-cool folkie Lori McKenna, March 26.

    Cheers!
