The office building above the Levante’s restaurant on 19th Street near Dupont Circle is currently in the midst of a serious fire. It started shortly after the lunch hour today, and is currently being fought by a number of DC’s Bravest. Engine 4 (Hornet’s Nest) Ladder 9 and Ladder 14, and an EMS and Fire command units and several ambulances. They’re moving trucks onto New Hampshire Avenue, as well, to fight the fire from all sides. According to EMS scanner reports, the fires are in the ductwork now, probably starting from Levante’s kitchen. They’re venting the roof with an axe and a chain saw right now.

Updates as they come.

And, to add insult to injury, those cars stuck at meters on 19th and elsewhere, trapped by the fire trucks, are all being ticketed. Way to go, DC DPW. (apologies to DDOT who I initially and incorrectly identified as issuing tickets.)

Additional reports form on scene suggest: “the closest fire hydrant isn’t working, so they have this gigantic hose connected to a hydrant on 20th street, and running down N for an entire block. It’s pretty ridiculous.”

  1. Apparently the closest fire hydrant isn’t working, so they have this gigantic hose connected to a hydrant on 20th street, and running down N for an entire block. It’s pretty ridiculous.

  2. and of course the closest hydrant isn’t working. guess the city will have to look into that. who would have ever thought that one of the hydrants wouldn’t be working???!?

  3. The fire hyrdants on 19th and Sunderland are working. I assume they are tapped into 20th because they need another hose.

  4. The smoke is gone, the fire is over, and the firefighters left the roof for the time being. Looks like they’re cleaning up on the ground too!

  5. P is right… On fires like this, more than one fire hydrant is often used to get extra water. I hope those parking tickets get dismissed! That’s ridiculous.

  6. Anyone else think it’s a little suspicious that this Levante’s burns down only a few months after they have to close up their Bethesda location because they’re in financial trouble?
Maybe I lived in Jersey too long.
