Via Nats News Network comes the news that DC’s ESPNZone is closing on June 16th, which will cancel all future Washington Nationals player Q&A sessions that had been scheduled there. It’s not just DC’s ESPNZone that’s closing, it’s the whole chain, except for two locations in Southern California. Disney cited poor performance of the chain as the reason for its demise.

It’s tough to see an anchor tenant like ESPN decide to take their business elsewhere, but it does open up some prime restaurant space in the middle of the downtown core. Don’t expect that space to be dark for long.

I live and work in the District of Columbia. I write at We Love DC, a blog I helped start, I work at Technolutionary, a company I helped start, and I’m happy doing both. I enjoy watching baseball, cooking, and gardening. I grow a mean pepper, keep a clean scorebook, and wash the dishes when I’m done. Read Why I Love DC.

  1. I already heard that Dave & Busters is looking at the space. I think it was on citybizlist.

  2. Oddly, whenever I’ve walked by one (DC, Baltimore and Atlanta) – they always seemed to be doing brisk business… perhaps it’s more mismanagement rather than the brand and restaurant itself… granted, I haven’t ever eaten there.

  3. I work right down the street from the DC ESPN Zone and frequent it for lunch and after work drinks and whether it’s noon or 11pm, there’s never a down time; so I agree with David, it must be a matter of mismanagement rather than actual lack of business.

  4. I was just in DC from June 5th through June 12th. I ate there every day for dinner.

Oddly enough, I found out about it on the local news right after dinner when I walked back to the hotel, which was right across the street from the ESPN Zone.

At least, when I go to California, I will still be able to go there.
