In yet another case of local-media-imitates-outlet-that-hasn’t-launched-yet, Gannett will be rolling out new “community websites” in 10 of its TV markets, including the DC area (They own WUSA9, the CBS affiliate, here). They aren’t saying when, but the idea is to “leverage user-generated content” to provide “hyperlocal coverage” and, of course, provide additional targeting data to advertisers. Will any of this user-generated content appear on the TV stations whose websites receive this coverage? Of course not. That’s for “professionals.” Which means I expect the Gannett stations to solicit this hyperlocal coverage for free.
