Obama Takes Stand Against Wave By Sitting

I hate the wave. I’m going to come right out and say it. I may or may not have yelled at the section next to me during Strasmas 1 when they attempted to start it. I was quite lucky that my section approved of my view against the monotony of this Hokey Pokey, Stand-Up-Sit-Down version of crowd participation.

I do not stand (sit?) alone. Last Friday, while taking in the opening game between the Nationals and his hometown team, the Chicago White Sox, an opportunistic photographer caught President Obama passing as the wave passed right on by. Did he really refuse to participate? I’d like to think so.

  1. Amen. I agree – the wave is stupid, and is only because attention-starved asshats need to feel like they’re leading something.

Kudos to POTUS for not joining in.

  2. I haven’t seen the wave at Nationals Park yet and last Friday was the first time I recall it happening there. I remember it happening at RFK during an exhibition game in ’91 though. I hope the Nats weren’t pitching at the time.

  3. I remember quite a few waves at RFK. That and the bouncing stands. I wish they recreated the bouncy stands at Nats Park — that was cool.

  5. Oooo it makes my blood boil ever so slightly when those giant student groups attending games get angry at us folks trying to pay attention to what’s going on down on the field when they try to start the wave and we (the baseball faithful) get snarky stares instead of participating. Grrr.

  6. Really…. Are we dissing the wave? I didn’t realize DC was this dense. Are we too smart and sophisticated for the wave? The wave is iconic. Would “When Harry met Sally” be the movie it is today without the memorable wave scene in Giant stadium – I think not.

  7. I support the wave. It’s a sign that the sport you’re watching is boring you. That’s why you see it so often at baseball games.
