Kelly Clarkson is a class act

A group of us got together on Saturday to celebrate our friend Jaimie’s birthday and decided to start with dinner at Gordon Biersch – not least because they were okay with us bringing in an ice cream cake.

They’ve also got an open-door policy on celebrity as well, it seems. After the fourth or fifth pair of young girls walked up to a neighboring table we figured out that Kelly Clarkson was dining there with a few friends.

As it turned out, Clarkson was on her way out the door just after our waiter brought out Jaimie’s cake. As she walked by one of us said “Hey Kelly, want to help us sing happy birthday?” She said “sure!” and asked whose birthday it was. Then she started singing, though she stopped after the first line to say one thing.

“The rest of you can join in anytime.”

So sue us – we were a little gobsmacked by the moment. We recovered and finished up our collaborative piece with the grammy winner.

It was a nice and genuinely warm moment from someone who could have just as politely said “can’t – gotta go!” and kept on moving. Kudos, Kelly Clarkson, for being nice to random strangers.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.

  1. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. Kelly was real, kind and unassuming 9 years ago and still is to this day. She obviously hasn’t been spoiled by her success, but instead, better than ever. You’re an inspiration Kelly, thank you.

  2. Great article. Kelly has always and will always be a class act. Fame and fortune has not changed her a bit. She is down-to-earth, strong, and self confident. Kelly is such a great role model. She is my favorite singer/artist/performer. I respect and admire her. Her incredible voice and wonderful personality has made me a fan forever!

  6. Doesn’t surprise me in the least…why do you think she has such loyal fans? She’s good to us.

(Other celebrities should take cue from Ms. Clarkson…Just sayin’…)

  7. Thank God I’m not famous. I’d hate to be “on” all the time, instead of being able to relax and have people leave me alone.

  8. But being “on” all the time is part of the fun! As a singer in my spare time I love being called upon for a little diddy from time to time. Granted, being “famous” might take away some of that appeal … but if you really love what you’re doing, much like Clarkson, then at the end of the day it’s totally worth it :D

  9. Kelly Clarkson is the best, what an incredible “role model” in an industry flooded with selfish performers!

  15. (Deep sigh) I never thought I’d be the one saying this but as an experienced critic of notable figures in society, I’m deeply concerned for her psychological & physical health. It’s plain to see she’s consuming way too many calories & fats without a proper balance of exercise. If she ever reads this I hope she takes my constructive criticism to heart. She’s going thru life blind folded while driving a car & pretty soon she’s going to crash. Compared to the average white-bun burger & fries devouring chubby American it’s not hard to tell the difference anymore. At the rate she’s going she’ll be claiming disability & riding the carts around at the grocery store because she can’t walk, in a nursing home by her late fifties, & pass away in her early sixties. Perhaps her weight gain is due to her parents neglect & lack of proper instruction & correction, which may also contribute to her social insecurities with men & friends. She should try skiing, swimming, jogging, or playing tennis or other activities that involve physical effort. If she were pregnant that would be excusable, but she’s not. Sub-consciously she’s saying it’s okay to be lazy & do whatever you want, just do what feels goods, everything’s okay regardless of future consequences. We don’t need more desensitized un-salubrious persons of either gender disturbing a member of the public with such nauseating behavior. Well I should stop because I’m sure there are some reading this that would like to start an argument. But of course I never argue with an idiot otherwise they’ll drag me down to their level & beat me with experience. Au Revoir.

  16. I was busy entertaining friends at another table when she stopped at yours. Did she eat a piece of that cake?

  17. michael, honey, you’re the one that needs the psychological counsuling…to spend so much of you’re time judging a nice woman that you don’t even know. And no, your standards are already at the lowest level there could ever be. she looks HEALTHY, leave her the hell alone…

  18. I’m just expressing my concern for her health. I’m just being honest & straightforward yet you have the audacity to ridicule me! I get the feeling that your cussing comes from a heart that is as dirty as a cesspool. The moral sewage that inhabits your soul and mind make your verbal assaults as weak as the chaff that the wind drives away. You parade your own moral deficiency on this discussion board by the crooked things you, yourself, have said.

  19. Jeremy, I apologize for speaking so harshly to you & about Kelly. After listening to Michael Lington’s “Twice in a Lifetime”, I’m very relaxed now. Unfortunately, I responded to your comment out of brusque exasperation. I suppose I acted this way due to my age & lack of maturity. I know Kelly is a good individual. I have nothing personal against her. I hope Kelly succeeds in every capacity in life & hereafter & would want nothing less. Cheerio to you & best of luck.
