Joy of joys! WAMU will be reairing The Big Broadcast on Sunday mornings. If you haven’t caught this fabulous show, hosted by Radio Hall of Famer and local DCite Ed Walker, then you’ve truly been missing out. The four hour long show features recordings of popular radio programs from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, and is seriously the best way to ease back into the coming work week.

While some of the programs can be on the cheesy side, i.e. “har. dee. har. har.” most of the shows offer fantastic whodunit story lines, wonderful radio renditions of classic books/plays and feature some of the brightest stars of that day like Orson Welles, James Stewart, Olivia De Havilland, Henry Fonda, Frank Sinatra, and many more.

  1. Wait, let me get this straight: This show will now be on for 8 hours on every sunday? On top of reruns of Prairie Home Companion? All of this gassy crap instead of giving Dick Spottswood a show on the only version of WAMU that most people can hear?

This is exactly the reason I stopped giving money to WAMU years ago. They destroyed their schedule in order to make WETA fans happy.

  2. I agree with Rebecca even though I can’t get those wonderful broadcasts here in Sydney Australia. I have found a number of the oldtime radio plays and downloaded them from Limewire. I LOVE them and being able to use my imagination instead of being forcefed via tv and cinema. Bring them back please>

  3. @Jane Walker Have you check the Big Broadcast website? They post the week’s show there and it’s possible you could download it/listen to it online.

  4. I’m with Reid on this one. I could live the rest of my life without hearing another Green Hornet or Lone Ranger program on the radio.
