A clever McSweeneys article this morning about underheard phrases in New York got the We Love DC Authors thinking: What are some quips that you just don’t hear enough in DC?

I proudly present, our attempts at #UnderheardInDC:

“You know, Chinatown really captures the spirit and history of a cultural neighborhood like any other city.”

“My cabbie tonight was so awesome! He spoke perfect English and I didn’t have to give him directions!”

“Getting tickets to tonight’s Wizards game was so hard.”

“All the parking meters are reasonably priced and in working order the majority of the time!”

“The HHS building fits so perfectly with the architectural character of downtown DC!”

“Waiting in line to get into a club is so worth it!”

Metro Section

“Wow, DC’s Metro is always on time, clean, and cheap – and the staff is so courteous!”

“My morning metro commute was so smooth. Everyone smelled nice, and I watched a teenage boy give up his seat to a pregnant woman.”

“You know, people seem to be standing on the left, but I’m ok with it because everyone has had a long day and this Rosslyn escalator is really long. I don’t need to push or give anyone a dirty look right now.”

Alright, readers, what else do you have? Comment it or tweet it with the #UnderheardInDC tag.

  1. Even though there three very different major jurisdictions in the region, everybody puts that aside and sees themselves as part of the same metropolitan area.

There are so many crossings of the Beltway in Virginia that you barely notice its there when you are driving past it.

The concession stands at sports arenas are staff such friendly, efficient employees.

  2. The drivers in this city are some of the best in the nation! I always feel so safe in the car, and everyone is so courteous in traffic.

  4. @Josh I believe DCist does a “Overheard in DC” post on Fridays. Our lampooning and fakery this morning is clearly a straight steal from McSweeneys on “Underheards.”

  5. I love going to Nats games – there’s always so much room to just spread out and make myself comfy

  6. Wizards is the best team name in the whole NBA, I hear it and think, Washington!

My condo association rules! They are really about making the community better for all involved and not just themselves.

Dog owners around here are so reasonable! They always clean up after the dogs and obey leash laws. They never argue that the dogs are their “children” either.

  7. I think the upcoming vote on HR____ is too important for me to stay silent. I’m going to call Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office and suggest she vote for/against it…
