What Ward 5 residents are talking about this week…

The big news from Brookland this week was that the police arrested a suspect in a string of muggings on Newton Street. Everyone who walks home that way (including me) was most relieved to hear the news.

Several of the mailing lists around the ward were buzzing about the federal HomeSaver program launching this month, designed to help the unemployed stave off foreclosure. The pilot phase of the program launches today in Wards 5, 7, and 8 (not coincidentally, the wards with the highest unemployment), and will go citywide on April 12.

Ward 5 residents are also still holding their breath and bracing for the disruption sure to come from the New York Avenue bridge rehabilitation project. So far, no lanes have been closed, but the plan calls for one lane to close at least part time until this summer, when two lanes will be closed at a time for two years.

Via the Eckington list, D.C. United has renewed its interest in a new soccer stadium, and one of the possible locations being discussed is the Capital City Market on Florida Ave. NE next to Gallaudet University. No word yet on what that would mean for the market itself, or for the massive flea market that gets going there on weekends.

Upcoming community meetings:

  • Brookland Civic Association – Tuesday, 1/18 7PM, Brooks Mansion
  • ANC5C Meeting – Tuesday, 1/18 7PM, Trinity University, Main Bldg Social Hall, 125 Michigan Avenue NE
  • ANC5A Meeting – Wednesday, 1/26 6:30 PM, St. Anthony’s Church in Brookland.
