Looking for a Few Good Beards

One of my personal favorite playoff hockey traditions is the growing of playoff beards. According to Wikipedia, the tradition of playoff beards started in the 1980s. Players grow their beards out as long as their team is still in playoff contention, leading to some epic (and not so epic beards): Karl Alzner, featured above, usually sports a great big bushy beard a few weeks into the playoffs.

Running with this tradition, the Washington Capitals started their Beard-A-Thon, where fans can pledge to support players growing beards, or grow their own beard. Progress is tracked via a series of pictures, and all proceeds are donated to the Fort Dupont Ice Rink.

We Love DC would like to sponsor a deserving Beard-A-Thon participant. Please submit links to your own beard or favorite beard-grower in the comments below. At 2pm on Friday, entries will be closed, all posts will be randomized, and $50 will be donated to the selected beard grower.

Addison is a fourth generation Washingtonian, actually born and raised within city limits of DC. He currently resides in Arlington and works in DC as a government lackey. Addison can be reached at addison (at) welovedc.com
