Red Hook Lobster Pound Gets a Second Truck

The lobsters have outgrown their shells and are getting a second truck. That’s right, hungry food truck stalkers–double your lobster, double your fun. Red Hook Lobster Pound’s second truck has actually been rolling around the streets unofficially for a while now, and is having its official launch this week.

I talked to Doug Povich and Leland Morris from the Lobster Truck and asked them a few questions about the second truck. Read what they had to say after the jump.

How did the idea for a second truck come about?
When we started with the first truck on August 19, 2010 at Farragut Square, the line around the park suggested we were on to something. It was really our followers who demanded a second truck. With almost daily posts and tweets saying “you guys need another truck”, we started the wheels rolling for Lobby 2 in November after only 3 months in business with Lobby 1.

Can you talk about the challenges you’ve experienced running two trucks so far?
Two trucks are exponentially more challenging than one in terms of logistics and especially staffing. It’s like handing your new baby over someone you hire and walking out the door. You need to have a lot of trust in the people you’ve hired and trained. Fortunately, we’re assembling a great crew and we’re confident that there won’t be any slippage in the quality we’re known for.

Any future lobstah plans you want to share?
Our plans include expanding service to Maryland and Northern Virginia. We recently received permits for Montgomery County and are working on Arlington and Fairfax. With two trucks, we’ll be able to spread lobstah love to the peeps across the river who have been patiently demanding our arrival there. We also hope Lobby 2 will help to satisfy the continuing strong demand here in DC where it all started.

Congratulations to Lobster Truck on their expansion, and to the demanding lobstalkers around DC whose wishes came true.

Marissa was born and bred in New Jersey, but moved to DC for undergrad at GWU (Go Colonials, go!), fell in love with the District and learned that there was life and civilization beyond New York City. She loves eating at white-tablecloth-three-forks-at-your-place-setting restaurants, but she’ll also be the first to suggest we scarf down some chili dogs at 2 am. Simply put, she loves all things food. You can also read about why she loves DC. Follow her on Twitter and email her at mbialecki (at) welovedc.com.

  1. Great news! I don’t really care to have a pricey lobster roll for lunch (maybe the shrimp roll) but if it does well out here in suburbia maybe more food trucks will follow.

  2. Oh, if you tried them, you just might start to care to have them (if you like lobster, that is)! They are obscenely good! They are worth every penny!

  3. While I haven’t tried the lobster lunch from a truck, I was quite impressed with their mad social marketing skills. I was at the National Association of REALTORS Midyear meetings at the Marriott Wardman and the Lobster Truck was tweeting for real estate agents and brokers attending to come try their food and gave the nearby location of their truck. It was enough to get me curious to go check them out.

  4. @Michelle – Trust me. It’s beyond worth it. I’m willing to pay a little more for food if it’s that good. Best lobster roll I’ve had thus far, and the fact that all their lobster is from Maine might be why they’re a bit “pricey.” Hot buttered buns, meaty lobster and friendly service–I’m sold.

@Brian – The food trucks in town have pretty stellar social media skills. They need it to attract business!

  5. One bite of their lobster roll will leave you “hooked”. I can’t wait until they cross the river in to VA. I work in Arlington and live in Old Town. I have been hitting Eastern Market on Saturdays to get my fix, so if they start regular trips to Virginia it will be so lovely!
