A human being can only eat so many hot dogs and hamburgers around the grill with family and friends. So here’s a helpful roundup of some food events that will get you out the door and give you something to do other than wondering if the steaks are done with Uncle Barry manning the grill.

Saturday, May 28th from 5-7 PM, you can head over to Bayou Bakery in Arlington for chef David Guas’ Crawfish Boil. Fifteen bucks gets you a pound of crawfish, potatoes and corn on the cob. Add beer and sno-balls, and maybe you’ll feel like you escaped the city without ever really leaving. If you’re a veteran or Rolling Thunder rider, you’ll receive 10 percent off of your check. There is also a second crawfish boil from 1-4 PM on Sunday, May 29th.

Keeping the fun out in Virginia, on Sunday, May 29th from 12-6 PM, Evening Star Cafe will host a barbecue in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 face. Chef Will Artley will be serving up black angus burgers, slow-smoked ribs and all the traditional Memorial Day weekend fixins like baked beans and potato salad. I think it goes without saying that yes, there will be beer. The restaurant will be converting the outdoor seating area to the “Snake Pit,” complete with TVs to watch the big race. For those with children, there will be cotton candy, face painting and matchbox car racing for the wee ones. There’s no entrance fee, but you will have to purchase food and drink tickets.

Bringing it back into the city limits for Monday, May 30th from 11-5 PM, you can eat til your heart’s content at Cafe St. Ex’s 3rd annual Memorial Day Chili Cook-Off. T street will close down for a community street festival that will feature some kid-friendly activities, as well as beer from a Peroni truck for those of you who need to drown out the noise from the kid-friendly activities. There’s no entrance fee, but bowls of chili are $6, $15 for a flight and $4 for beers. Six chefs will be putting their best chili on the line and all proceeds from the chili cook-0ff will go towards Garrison Elementary School.

Have a fun, safe and most importantly, tasty weekend!

Marissa was born and bred in New Jersey, but moved to DC for undergrad at GWU (Go Colonials, go!), fell in love with the District and learned that there was life and civilization beyond New York City. She loves eating at white-tablecloth-three-forks-at-your-place-setting restaurants, but she’ll also be the first to suggest we scarf down some chili dogs at 2 am. Simply put, she loves all things food. You can also read about why she loves DC. Follow her on Twitter and email her at mbialecki (at) welovedc.com.
