Rachel: I’m embarking upon a self-imposed stay-cation for the weekend and will be hiding away in my studio apartment. What will I be doing? Turning off all electronic devices, sticking a guitar in my hands along with a pen and paper on the side, and writing. My goal is to come away with at least one solid song from the process and a lot of additional material to continue to work on as time progresses. If I weren’t tucked away in songwriter’s solitude, I’d likely find myself at Kramer’s — which happens often on the weekends — for a bagel and lox on Saturday. I’ve also been trying to stay active now that I have my mountain bike, so I’d like to scope out some good riding paths around town that are as far away from major streets as possible. When I need a break from music making, my bike will take me somewhere to clear my cluttered head. Any suggestions of where to ride? Leave ’em in the comments!

Brittany: On Thursday, I am heading to the Black Cat (second time this week) to see charming English twee-pop outfit Allo Darlin’. I really am terribly twee, after all. Friday night, I will be stopping by the headquarters of The Dunes LLC in Columbia Heights for a fashion-photography exhibit closing party, featuring a few vintage and boutique vendors to shop while partying – including my beloved Ginger Root. I cannot stay very late though, because I have to wake up rather early to embark on a mini-road trip up to Brooklyn. This will call for a coffee stop at SOVA or Peregrine before I drive anywhere. My companion and I will devote the rest of our weekend to an intense schedule of seeing friends, shopping, drinking awesome cocktails, and, possibly, the McQueen exhibit.

Fedward: it’s all theatre, all the time this weekend. We’re catching Company at AFI Silver, the PWYC preview of Pinky Swear Productions’ Cabaret XXX, and rounding out our weekend with The History of Kisses at Studio. And we won’t forget to call our dads on Sunday before we head to brunch. At Passenger. As always.

Rebecca J.: Friday I’m gonna be sitting outside, eating some gourmet cheese and sipping on stellar wines at Screwtop Wine Bar and Cheese Shop in Clarendon. May hit up Iota to check out a performance by the Morrison Brothers Band. Saturday, I’ll at the Battle of the Beltway game between the Orioles and the Nationals at Nationals Park. There are plenty of tickets still available and it’s definitely a series worth heading out to the stadium for and there’s already plenty o’ smack talk going around the blogopshere about who shall prevail. Plus, you can check out the stadium’s new food offerings. Sunday, it’s Father’s Day, so it’s all about dad. This will likely mean grilling it up and drinking my dad’s favorite Baltimore beer Heavy Seas.

Marissa: Ah the weekend, who knows where it will take me. In an ideal world, I’d be checking out the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival in the National Harbor. The name pretty much says it all. There are some tickets left for the session on the 17th, so if you’re interested grab ’em while you can. Friday night I’m hoping to check out Rock and Roll Hotel’s free Epic Dance Party, featuring DJ Dok Rok (check out his cool 50 cent and oldies mashups). By the time Sunday rolls around, I’ll probably be spending some quality time with my couch. Don’t forget to wish Dad a happy Father’s Day this Sunday!

Tom: This weekend looks like it’s going to be just about perfect. I’m hoping to head out to the store tonight to get provisions to celebrate perfect barbecuing season on Friday night. Saturday, I’ll be at Nats Park early to get a headstart on the Battle of the Beltways series against Baltimore, and to enjoy a few minutes with a pair of friends who are heading down from New York for a wedding at the Mandarin Oriental. Sunday will be breakfast at Cap City Diner, who’ve just rolled out a new menu, including my favorite: biscuits and gravy. I have them sparingly, but they’re always delicious. Sunday is also the final day of the US Open at Congressional, so I’ll be staying far, far away from the Northwest quadrant of the beltway as 50,000 people pack in to watch the last round.

I live and work in the District of Columbia. I write at We Love DC, a blog I helped start, I work at Technolutionary, a company I helped start, and I’m happy doing both. I enjoy watching baseball, cooking, and gardening. I grow a mean pepper, keep a clean scorebook, and wash the dishes when I’m done. Read Why I Love DC.

  1. Rachel,

Assumptions: 1) You live in the city and 2) have no access to a car.

Both the Mt. Vernon and Capital Crescent Trails offer escape from the city and nicely paved trails. However, if you really want to escape the sight of all buildings, take the C&O Canal Trail. It mirrors the Capital Crescent Trail at first, but becomes a packed dirt trail that is fun to ride with a mountain bike and doesn’t require any fancy moves or jumping over logs. And it’s part of a trail that goes 330-uninterrupted miles to Pittsburgh if you REALLY need to clear your head.
