In the real of complaints I have to say “jeez, the weekend again already?” might be my favorite. If you’ve only now started to recover from your own “day of food and fire,” as my friend Suzanne calls the 4th of July, maybe you don’t have plans yet. Well, steal ours. If you see us there please don’t look us in the eye – we’re shy like that.

Brittany: The big thing this weekend (where I think I will be seeing everybody I know) is definitely C.L.I.T.fest (that stands for Combating Latent Inequality Together, by the way – nothing else you might be thinking). The three day event – “combining music and education to both challenge patriarchal oppression and promote involvement in DIY” – kicks off on Friday at St Stephen’s church in Columbia Heights with an impressive, feministy musical line-up headlined by Lemuria and also featuring super-good DC girls Trophy Wife. Come back throughout the weekend for classes on screen printing, self-defense, and everything else a modern kid needs to know to “undermine patriarchy, homophobia, and transphobia in punk and DIY” including more music at St Stephens and the Black Cat. For just a bit more music and DC love, I will wrap up my weekend on Monday by seeing my friends Title Tracks at Fort Reno.

Mosley: It’s the second weekend of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival; I went last weekend and enjoyed myself.  I’m looking forward to seeing more of Peace Corps and Columbia cultures.  I’m particularly looking forward to going to one of the late night concerts of the Rhythm and Blues culture (here’s the schedule for the musical acts).  I don’t normally go to the night concerts, so this will be an experience.  Other than that, I’m looking forward to some relaxation.  I’m thinking either a lazy day walk to the Dumbarton Oaks Museum.  Or an even lazier walk to find a good milk shake.  I’ve tried Shake Shack and Goodstuff, so something else is in order…suggestions welcomed!

Rebecca J.: Friday evening I’m experiencing Wolf Trap for the first time with Play! A Video Game Symphony, in which the National Symphony Orchestra plays music from Super Mario Brothers, World of Warcraft, FINAL FANTASY®, the Legend of Zelda, Halo, Battlefield 1942, and many more. These blockbuster video game themes will be paired with outstanding visuals on huge screens in-house and on the lawn. I. Am. Pumped. Saturday I’ll head down to the Mall for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, but if the crowds and heat are too overwhelming, I’ll hit the National Air & Space Museum (which I haven’t visited in years) to cool off and escape the madness. Saturday evening, I’ll meander over to Local 16 for the Eat Local First Pig Roast featuring White House Meat’s fresh, roasted Berkshire pork sourced from High View Farm in Berryville, VA and summer vegetables sourced from Whipple Farms in Rixeyville, VA. Tickets are $15 and include two drinks. All proceeds from the roast go to Think Local First DC. Sunday, I’ll be spending the morning in my garden, but afterwards the BBQ fest continues with an early evening trip to Hill Country to nom on Beef Ribs, Longhorn Cheddar Mac & Cheese and White Shoepeg Corn Pudding.

Fedward: It’s the first weekend of Fringe, so that’s where I’ll be Friday night and all day Saturday. The Social Chair sings, my office wife ponders what babies taste like, and I’m just going to have to stop there because I could probably list personal connections to about half the shows in the festival. Sunday I’ll be at the Fancy Food Show. Exhibitors from the DC region include Dolci Gelati, CookieZen, and Route 11 Potato Chips (profiled by the Post’s Tim Carman), Gifford’s Ice Cream, Abuelita Mexican Foods (makers of Nana’s tortilla chips, which actually taste like, you know, corn), and Mayorga coffee. I’ll be spending the entire day on the show floor scouting out the things you’ll see arriving in restaurants, supermarkets, and specialty retailers over the next year.

Rachel: Should be a fun yet quick weekend. Friday night I’m stopping off at the Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan for some brews and a quick chat with the booking agent for a future gig there, so stay tuned for that. Then, it’s off to Sign of the Whale for yet another one of those happy hours one of my friends won. Saturday will be a fun day at Nats U for Women, which I’ve never attended before. I look forward to hearing what the Nats coaches have to say and meeting some of the Nats biggest fans while seeing some old friends. Saturday night is a birthday celebration with festivities at The Guards in Georgetown which will be followed by the Nats day game Sunday and my own Sunday evening softball game with the Glover Park Co-Ed Softball League at Stoddert Field in Cleveland Park. Basically, I’ll be running around town from Friday to Sunday. Someone tell me again why we don’t have an extra day to recoup after our weekend before the work week?

Jenn: Wow, summer’s busy. Tonight starts my Capital Fringe Festival marathon where I’ll cover seven shows over two weeks in partnership with DC Theatre Scene. Look for quickie reviews here and there! Saturday brings theater of a different tune when actor/singer/songwriter Morgan Karr plays at Napoleon in Adams Morgan – they say his music is “too theater to be pop, and too pop to be theater” which definitely intrigues. Show starts at 9:30pm, tickets are $15 at the door. If you love tequila, the Quill Cocktail Competition on Sunday afternoon from 2-6pm features local bartenders mixing up drinks with Tequila Ocho Plato Single Estate. Tickets are $50, but it’s definitely an afternoon delight at the lush Jefferson Hotel. To round it out, if like me you are being especially frugal these days, head to Yoga District for some uplifting classes – new students can sign up for 3 classes at $10. I’m already addicted.

Gene: Friday I’m leaving the flourescent cubicle behind first to Bell’s Wine & Liquors for an American Beauty cocktail tasting, then to a Celebration dinner at Acadiana with some succulent roast duck at alcove Table 20.  If weather cooperates, post-dinner drinks will be in order on a comfy patio couch (I’m thinking Cajun Dark ‘n Stormy or a traditional Sazerac). Saturday’s all about family time with the cousins at Rock Creek Park during the day; if I can get away, probably Nats game vs Colorado Rockies at night or maybe save the game face for Sunday’s Nats game to watch JZimm pitch. Either way, I’m hoping to catch the Local 16 Local Roast either early or late, it’s from 12-5pm so plenty of time.

Don: Fringe fringe fringe, maybe go hang with some Indonesians and see about breaking a world record, oh, did I mention FRINGE?

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
