We Love Weekends – August 13th through 15th

As if the week didn’t usually feel long enough now we have this beautiful weather to tease us. Nobody but your boss would blame you for playing hooky tomorrow and trading Friday’s mild and sunny for the possibility of significant (but needed) rain on Sunday. If you need other ideas, well, we’ve got some…

Patrick Palafox: This is an eventful weekend of comedy. Evan Valentine and Mike James are throwing their comedy showcase “Everybody Gets Laid” Friday night over at the Velvet Lounge starting at 7:30 PM. Saturday is a great night to get some tasty food as well as tasteful comedy happening over at The Gibson. They are having the comedy showcase “Barbeque and Comedy” that is serving food at 8 and comedy at 9. It costs $22 to be able to eat as much barbeque as your body can hold and see the show. If you want to go I suggest you reserve a seat in advance.

Tom: Saturday is the highlight of my weekend, without question. We’re headed out to Berryville for the wedding of our good friends John and Whitney at a lovely piece of Georgian architecture. Friday night, I think it’s time we finally got out to Toki Underground, but I suspect that given their usual level of busy we may have to have a backup plan. Depending on how late Saturday goes, Sunday may well just be a day of rest, but it could be that I head out to American Ice Company for a tasty pickle back

Patrick Pho: My weekend will start with some errands- things like dropping off a couple of jackets at my tailor. The big event however will be finally cashing in my LivingSocial deal at Silver Eagle Group, a gun range out in Loudon County. That’s right- I’m picking up a firearm and taking some shots. I hope to make it back alive. After that experience I’ll probably be found around town probably keeping up my streak of 29 straight weeks at bars.

Rachel: This weekend, I’m getting out of town but staying within the local vicinity. Doesn’t make sense, does it? Well here are the details … Friday night a friend and I are doing the quick road trip to the Sonic in some part of Virginia. I forget where it is exactly but I know I’ve been there before so I’ll report back with the location once I’m sure of it. Then, I’m waking up bright and early Saturday morning with a group of friends from college to go tubing at Harpers Ferry in West Virginia (it’s a day trip, really!) Upon our return to the District, I’ve got a birthday to celebrate at James Hoban’s which I will likely sleep off well into Sunday before heading to Friendship Heights for a Miami Burger at Booeymonger.

Rebecca J: I am tired. I am hungry. I am, despite it being August, extremely pale. Given this, I’m going to be spending the vast majority of my weekend in a reclined position with food by my side and a drink in my hand. Friday, I’ll get picked up by my friend at the Georgetown Waterfront to head out for happy hour on his small boat on the Potomac. We’ll cruise up past the Key Bridge, anchor away and sip beers while cooling off in the river and watching the sun set around DC. Yes, you can and its safe to swim in the Potomac. Saturday, I’ll be up early-ish doing some much needed garden weeding, and then heading to the Glover Park Burleith Farmer’s Market around lunchtime for some Sauca food truck deliciousness. Sunday, I’ll grab a blanket and pack a picnic basket and set myself up on the lawn of the National Cathedral for some leisurely reading and napping time.

Fedward: My weekend starts with Longacre Lea’s premiere of Kathleen Akerley’s Something Past In Front of the Light. Late Friday night I’ll head up to my apartment’s roof to see what I can see of the Perseid meteor shower, despite the full moon. Saturday I’m on my own as the Social Chair does sooper seekrit theater stuff (I don’t know what goes on in that room, and I don’t want to know). I’ll probably head out to northern Virginia (weekend trips on Metro are always fun, but I don’t own a car) to hang out with a friend I never see (mostly on account of the difficulty of getting out there on weekends). Sunday, judging by our calendar, we’ve got plans to catch dinner and a show with a friend, which I think means using a deal we have at Dino and our LivingSocial coupon for Fandango. And if that doesn’t work out as planned, there’s always hangover brunch.

Ben: In an attempt to rectify a rather bad weekend at GenCon in Indianapolis last week, the better half and I will be spending a predicted beautiful Saturday splitting time between Old Town Alexandria and Eastern Market. First up will be the farmer’s market in Old Town, followed by a trip via Metro to Eastern Market, where we’ll then enjoy a “Celebration of Games” at Labyrinth Games. Kathleen, the owner, promises lots of great game demos and visits by designers from Looney Labs, Evil Hat Games, and others; the celebration is in part for the store’s nearly one-year anniversary and the owner’s birthday. Once we’re gamed out, it’s back to Old Town for dinner (probably at Murphy’s Pub), wandering through various shops, and the required visit to Candy’s Candies. Sunday is forecasting rain, so we’ll either hole up in the house and plan a fall trip to the Shenandoah for when the leaves start to change color or start perusing the Capital’s season schedule and plot out the games we want to attend this year.

Katie: I’m soon to become a District resident, which means I’m trying to squeeze every last ounce out of the deep Virginia suburbs that I possibly can. The boyfriend and I are heading to Willard’s BBQ (literally THE BEST in all of the DMV area) for some pulled pork Eastern North Carolina style, I’ll probably hit up Herndon’s Down Dog Yoga for some hot vinyasa, take a spin around Reston Town Center (Anthropologie! J.Crew! Sweetgreen! Oh My!) and spend some quality time petting goats, feeding sheep and seeing zebras at the Reston Zoo. Maybe take a little meander around Great Falls to watch the kayakers. Then, finally, I’ll wave goodbye and not look back! DC, here we come!

Marissa: While my heart belongs to DC, I am starting to get down with the notion that Virginia and Maryland have more to offer me than just getting lost on the highway. Old Town Alexandria is having a sidewalk sale on Saturday from 10 AM – 6 PM that I plan on checking out. After that, it’s out to the countryside of Virginia for me to cook and grill with one of my good friend’s band (guys like copious amounts of grilled meat, right?). Sunday I’m canning with Cathy Barrow, but if I wasn’t doing that I’d be headed straight to Bourbon Steak for their Pig Out pig roast. Maybe I’ll squeeze in a beer at Churchkey to kick off DC Beer Week.

Moses: Starting the weekend tonight by celebrating my brother’s return from Ghana and Sierra Leone tomorrow with fish curry served at a very leisurely pace at Ghana Cafe.  He’s had enough fou-fou for you-you but not for me-me! Friday evening I’m saying farewell to his dog I’ve been sitting with a goodbye walk through Rock Creek Park.   I’m scooting out of town Saturday am, but if I wasn’t, I would be enjoying the first sub-90 degree weekend in months with friends and kayaks under Key Bridge from Jack’s Boathouse.  My return to the city coincides with DC Beer Week 2011 and its kick-off craft beer cruise on Sunday! Something to re-SAVOR.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
