Sometimes Patty Boom Boom feels almost a little bit “secret.” As the numerous nightspots by the Hilton Brothers go, it seems to get a little less attention than its sister bars around the corner and down the street. The upstairs is reserved for dj nights which skew towards reggae and dub, the sounds of which filter down to the small area just inside the door where one can sit, grab a patty for dinner, and enjoy a Red Stripe or one of the bar’s signature rum cocktails.
On a drizzly night, sitting at the front window bar and watching the traffic and people walk by from within the warmth of the cafe space is delightful, made all the more so by the delicious rum punches. To go with the recent weather, I opt for the dark punch, rich with molasses and spiced flavors. The sweetness goes perfectly with the heat of the food and they really enhance each other.
While tasty and quaffable, I must warn that these fresh-made punches always seem to be quite strong on the intoxicating quotient, so keep that in mind if, as it often is for me, Patty Boom Boom is your last stop of an evening along 14th Street.
