We Love Weekends: Nov 4-6

Well, the chill is in the air for good, it seems, though we’re still feeling it a lot more at night than during the day. But we’re not going to let that stop us from enjoying those delightful 48 hours between quittin’ time Friday till the sad moments Monday morning when we return to our punishment jobs.

Marissa: This weekend is promising to be a busy one. Friday night I’m heading to 9th and U street to see my friends’ band, Level 7, headline at Axum DC. On Saturday, I’m heading out to the second annual Vices of Virginia for bourbon, cigars, oysters, a photobooth and a ton of food all on a scenic farm. Me and my tastebuds are beyond excited. Hopefully Sunday morning I’ll mosey over to Eastern Market, grab some brunch, read the paper and settle into the idea of Monday.

Mosley: Interesting Saturday for me.  I recently went to see the Anglo-Saxon Gold Hoard exhibit at the National Geographic Museum (review coming soon); put very simply, well worth seeing.  But in addition to the exhibit, Nat Geo is doing some workshops in connection with the exhibit.  This Saturday is one about Anglo-Saxon poetry and language, using Beowulf as the example.  It sounds fascinating.  In addition to that, this weekend kicks off FotoWeek DC.  I might be the only photographer in the city not thrilled with this festival, but there are some intriguing events.  For example, Saturday night is Night Visions; basically an all night (8pm to 4am) photo party.  I’m equally interested in the staying up all night and the night photography.  And bonus: extra hour as we Fall back!

Rachel: It’s my friend’s birthday this weekend so we’re headed to H Street Country Club for a round of mini-golf and some drinks before surveying the rest of the H Street NE scene. I’m hoping for a stop at Star & Shamrock so I can get a Harp on tap and a deli appetizers. Saturday, I’m stopping off at Court House for some coffee talk with another local blogger followed by a photo shoot at Union Station for my upcoming Winter Tour (which kicks-off on 11/17 at Fireflies in Alexandria). Then, that night, there’s a DC Local Music Party at The Dunes (1402 Meridian Pl NW) featuring the following local troubadours and their bands: Alex Vans, Adrian Krygowski and W Ellington Felton.

Brittany: This weekend involves very little relaxing before my busy upcoming week. Thursday night starts with a party for my other job and then I scurry from Georgetown up to The Dunes for The Folly’s “Night School” event, a fundraiser for the DC print magazine about the creative life, which will include a chance for me to see Jason McCool’s Mahler presentation that Tom liked so much at Ignite DC. On Friday, a good friend is playing drums in a show at SOVA, after which I have glamorous plans to walk around the corner to a friend’s house and second-chair some beer homebrewing. The next day, the same friend will also be hosting a pig-roasting party which he worried might make my vegetarian heart cry; I am going to be strong, attend, and nibble on some lettuce in a corner.  At some point during the pork-party, I will slip out down H Street to the #DCRESIDENCE opening party which will be a great celebration of the DC creative community and a lot of fun.

Huzzard: Yet again I am facing an unbalanced weekend. My plan for Saturday is no plan which normally means it will be a day filled with activities. I just don’t know what they are at the moment. Sunday though is going to be a fun and exciting day of sitting in traffic, wondering through a parking lot of people drinking and grilling, and then watching the Redskins do something against the 49ers, and that something is likely to be nothing good.

Tom: My beloved 49ers are here this weekend, which has me unnaturally excited about the Redskins game for the first time in recent memory. But before that, it’s time to hit up the last farmers markets of the season, like the H Street Market, which closes in a couple weeks, for some acorn squash, some delicious cauliflower and locally sourced meats. I’m also looking to repeat my successful H Street/Hill bike loop, and maybe find a new route, as well.

Moses: The weekend will include family in town to celebrate the arrival of my new niece Nov 3 (Welcome to the World, Meghan!) so I’ll gladly fire up the grill and the patio heat lamp.  A sunny and clear weekend will feel like autumn right down to the college football “game of the year” (the first of 2011, anyway) on Saturday: #1 LSU at #2 Alabama! While I side slightly to the purple and gold of LSU, I’ll be watching with the Alabama Alumni crowd at Old Dominion Brewhouse Saturday night.  Sunday will require a venue that shows more than the 49ers at Redskins game.  Choices, Choices (but no Tashard Choice) will get me to sneak away from the cooing crowds and possibly end up at Buffalo Billiards this Sunday to watch all the games.

Alexia: Saturday morning I’ll be getting up at an ungodly hour to hit up the last Arlington Civitan flea market of the year! I’m hoping to repeat my good luck from the past few this time around (got an awesome vintage dress for $2, a box full of cello and bass bridges for $5, and a pair of brand new Italian made Harley Davidson knee-high boots for a steal as well!). Saturday night if I don’t crawl into bed early I will be dancing the night away to tunes provided by DJ Micah Vellian (1/3 of the electro-supergroup Volta Bureau) upstairs at Rock & Roll Hotel. Sunday will find me in Old Town Alexandria for a morning coffee and stroll to appreciate the fall foliage with my sister and baby nephew, probably stopping by Gossypia to admire their Dia De los Muertos merchandise and beautiful Mexican jewelry.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
