It’s so hot we’re moving slower and you’re getting this entry on Friday instead of our usual Thursday. Addison, after last week’s hicksplosion, has not showed up for weekends. We can only assume he spontaneously combusted. You’re missed, Addison.

Joanna: After having no power for almost a week, I’m hoping to spend a good deal of my weekend sitting next to the air conditioner with a glass of ice and a wireless connection. If and when I venture outside, it will be to see some previews for the Fringe Festival (opening July 12!) and catch the opening of the uber-local exhibition Stocking the Fridge. Since my better half is finally back in town, we’ll also be hitting up The Arlington Civitan Open Air Market for some juice glasses and the Arlington Farmers’ Market for veggies with which to make said juice.

Tom: Weekends! Woo! Though the mid-week holiday was great, I’m still feeling like I need a bit of an adventure. Part of me wants to pack up the car and head to the beach for a day of fun, but the other part remembers the traffic and hassle and reconsiders. Friday night and Sunday afternoon, I’ll be at Nationals Park watching the NL East-leading Nationals and their 3 (maybe 4) All Stars make it to the midway point of the season. With weather slated to tip the mercury at 106°F on Saturday, I will be sheltering in place with a bucket of ice and all of the water. After last weekend’s bike ride adventures in the heat, I’m not even thinking about going for a ride this weekend, which is both sad and realistic. Sunday, catch me at the Nationals game

Mosley: Last week’s storm denied me a chance to go to the Folklife Festival, so I’ll have to make the most of it this weekend.  Other than that, it’s just trying to stay cool in this heat; I was thinking that a day inside watching movies and doing nothing is in order.

Alexia: As per usual, a weekend of rock is in order for me! Friday night I’ll be heading to a house show to rock out to Shark Week, Paperhaus & Typefighter! Saturday going to a birthday bbq, and then I hope to make it to Black Cat to catch the Americana goodness that is These United States! Sunday my adorable nephew turns 1! Huzzah! So I’ll be celebrating Mr. Cute in the afternoon, and then in the evening heading to the Howard Theater for the first time to see synth legends Tangerine Dream melt some minds!

Natalia: So I guess there is no more denying that the heat wave will pass. 100+ degrees on Saturday means I’ll be doing a tour of all things cold. Mainly, pools and frozen drinks, think: slushitos at Estadio or sno cones at Jack Rose. Swimming under the influence not encouraged though. I’ve also been wanting to check out Bachelorette at The Studio Theatre, so will get some drama in my Saturday night. Sunday I want to check out The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which last year did an awesome job of highlighting the greatness of my country Colombia, and this year will feature all things Hawaii. Sunday night a chill dinner at Big Bear Cafe to try the new menu by chef John Cochran will kick it right. Stay cool, peeps.

Don: We might not leave the house at all this weekend if it wasn’t for the dog and his continued failure to learn to use the indoor toilet. Such an under-achiever. Since we can’t brick up the doors we may as well go out, and what better reason than Rickey Month? I’m going to make sure to try the two choices at Passenger, of course, but what of the other 20 or so? Tough choice. Thankfully I have a few weeks to work my way through the list.

Fedward: The Social Chair and I largely plan to swelter in place thanks to the heat. If we head out at all, we’ll make sure to have a Rickey wherever we go (air conditioning in a glass, indeed). We might also head to the air-conditioned AFI Silver Theatre for as many movies as possible before we step back out into the heat. We might also steal this idea for tequila infused watermelon. Passenger brunch on Sunday? If we haven’t melted first, then sure.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.

  1. Is the flea market this weekend for sure? I was checking their website and it didn’t list July. I really hope it is just a mistake. :)

  2. the Arlington Civitan flea market (in the multi-level garage over 66 on N. Quincy St.) is always on the first Saturday of the month. :)
