We Love Weekends – Sep 7 – 9

Marissa: After a bunch of time out of town, I’m ready to get reacquainted with the district. I’ll be browsing through what’s showing this weekend in the DC Shorts Film Festival, and then finding some time to stop by the freshly opened Union Market. Come Sunday, some friends and I are planning on checking out the sights and sounds at the annual Adams Morgan Day Festival. If I’m lucky, I’ll sneak a good brunch in there somewhere.

Tom: Weekend again?! Already?! Awesome!! After last weekend’s successful group of parties for the Doctor Who premiere and Labor Day Weekend, look for a low-and-slow sort of weekend. Part of me is thinking it might be good to try out last year’s course for the WABA 50 States ride or maybe start looking at The Seagull Century as a potential longer rides to stretch my legs. I’m also looking forward to some time at either American Ice Company or Boundary Stone DC to enjoy my favorite spots in the city. My beloved 49ers start the season this weekend, also, so look for me out at one DC’s finer sports bars with my Jerry Rice jersey on.

Nicole: I’ll be in Chicago this weekend for a wedding (including attending my first-ever bachelorette party), but I’ll tell you exactly what I would do if I were here in DC. I would definitely not miss Fashion’s Night Out in Georgetown. There’s so much free food it’s like college all over again, only with more tiny cupcakes. Fewer tiny cupcakes but still awesome? The new American Trail exhibit at the National Zoo. Between that and the cheetah cubs, I would definitely be planning a visit this weekend. Oh, and I would hang the pictures I said I was going to hang last weekend. Sue me.

Fedward: with the wedding approaching rapidly we have hit panic mode on all discretionary spending. As such we’ll be doing lots of free things from now until, oh, forever, it seems. That said, I want to see the Jasper Johns exhibit at the Phillips Collection which closes this weekend, and which isn’t free, but art is worth something, right? Sunday we’ll be at the opening of Invisible Man at Studio Theatre, with a quick stop at the Passenger for brunch either before or after. Meanwhile we’ll be counting down days to Puerto Rico.

Katie: I’m refusing to let go of summer. I just can’t. I know that we have something good together. In order to squeeze every last ounce of glory out of my favorite season of the year, I’m heading to the Nationals Game on Friday and stopping by Truckeroo first in order to get my food truck on. Saturday, I’m taking a barre class at my new favorite Hill establishment, Biker Barre. Barre sounds all pretty and ballerina-y, but let me tell you, my tooshie hurt for DAYS after my first go round. They don’t joke. Saturday night I’m hosting a Favorite Things party for my friends, and I’m going to do my best Oprah impression. Sunday, I’m heading to an outdoor pool (you people realize there are a few still open? glory be.) and then we’re grilling out with goods from Eastern Market. Summer, you are mine. Never leave me.

Jenn: After many years of being a Logan Circle resident, I’m moving next week to Columbia Heights. So imagine me surrounded by packing crates this weekend (and please feel free to send suggestions of places I should get to know in the new ‘hood!). There’s still room for mayhem, however, just of the more quiet type. Tonight sees the opening of the DC Shorts Film Festival, running until the 16th and showcasing over 140 films of about 1-20 minutes in length. The films are batched into 16 90-minute showcases, making them easy to catch, with a variety of genres from 27 countries. There’s also parties, screenings paired with food from local chefs, and a Screenwriting Competition. Friday I’m getting out from underneath all those packing boxes to meet up with fellow WLDC mate Rachel at the Dupont Underground fundraiser to check out musical performances presented by DC Setlist. Did you know there’s 75,000 square feet of an old trolley station under Dupont Circle? Wouldn’t it be amazing to transform that into an arts center? Join us at the party and get involved!

Alexia: Friday night I’m hoping to make it to two awesome musical happenings: Volta Bureau (DJ Will Eastman’s band) is performing live on the mainstage of the Black Cat, and former We Love DC music editor Michael Darpino will be DJing shoegazer & post-punk tunes at Marx Cafe in Mount Pleasant for We Fought The Big One! What a cool night of music! Saturday we’ll see where the chips fall… Sunday night I am so psyched to see The Jesus and Mary Chain at 930 Club, though if I didn’t have tickets to that I’d be heading to SOVA on H Street for their Second Sundays showcase featuring the awesome Teething Veils, along with Suicide Magnets and Embarker. It’s free!

Rachel: The highlight of my weekend will surely be some sweet catch up time with fellow WLDC’er Jenn at the Dupont Underground fundraiser to check out musical performances presented by DC Setlist. Saturday night’s another night of music at IOTA where  Derek Evry will be playing an album release show for his new LP “Here’s To Better Misery.” The show features performances by Derek’s full band, The Weathervanes, and Norman Rockwell. Show starts at 8 p.m. Then if I’m not sleeping I’ll try my luck at heading to Nats Park to catch their 1:35 p.m. game against the Marlins.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
