We Love Weekends: Oct 5-7

October? How did that happen? This calendar is broke, someone call IT!

Well, whatever. We give up. Less sweating and in a month we can stop seeing all those damned political ads targeted at Virginia voters. What’s the point of living in solid state Maryland or all-DNC-all-the-time DC if you still have to watch this endless back and forth before every presidential election?

We’re planning on ignoring the ads best we can and have some diversions planned. Want to hear about them? Here you go.

Marissa: Who said it wasn’t acceptable to start drinking before 5 PM? [Editor’s note: nobody on our staff, we assure you] Saturday afternoon I’ll be over at the Passenger for a cocktails class, learning all about the basics of bartending from none other than the master himself, Derek Brown. Here’s to hoping my friends can stop grimacing at my heavy-handed cocktails after this class. Then it’s off to chat with Ted Bulletin’s pastry chef, Rebecca Albright, so I can deliver a good fall dessert recipe to you fine readers. Come Sunday a brunch with friends kicks off the day before apple picking somewhere out in Virginia or Maryland. Leave a comment if you know of a great orchard!

Fedward: the Social Chair and I are celebrating our last full weekend as a non-married couple by turning down all invitations on Saturday. It’s even marked on our calendar already as “No. Nothing. Not available.” Rest assured, however, that the day will be completely full with preparations for the wedding. Friday she’s meeting with her seamstress for a dress fitting, and Sunday we’ll be at the Passenger not just for our usual brunch, but also for the Scofflaw’s Den Anniversary Party. PR minus fifteen days and counting!

Rachel: I’ll be honest, my only real plans this weekend include playing a solo acoustic set at STPP Music Fest on Friday night at Secret Lounge near Logan Circle (I go on at 8:50 p.m.) and sleeping. I’ll also be waiting to see where the NL East Champion Nationals will end up playing postseason baseball once those details come available. I still can’t believe that the fever dream on Monday night was for real!

Rebecca: Friday I’m headed to a preview of Captiale which is being promoted as “DC’s newest Hogwarts-meets-Hollywood inspired nightlife venue.” Not sure exactly what that means, but I’ll be sure to let you all in on it. Saturday is VirginFest out at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Definitely going to check out Santigold, M83, Trampled By Turtles, Nas and many more.  Sunday I’ve got an epic game of sloshball scheduled and then I’ll settle in for the 2 hour season finale of AMC’s Hell On Wheels. Anson Mount hotness.

Alexia: What else, but a weekend of rock? And what a weekend of rock it is! Tonight Austin’s amazing The Octopus Project plays at Red Palace. They are so much fun live, and have a virtuoso theremin player who plays an really cool Moog theremin and has amazing hair & fashion to boot. Friday night the Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Fest kicks off, and I’ll be playing with my band The Torches as part of that at Club Heaven in Adams Morgan. Also on the bill for this FREE show are our good friends Typefighter, and opening the night is Sweetbread Jim’sShow starts at 8pm sharp! Saturday I’ll be spending all day and night at Merriweather Post Pavilion (please don’t rain!) for the Virgin Free Fest, featuring among many others M83, Ben Folds Five, Santigold, Jack White and The Dismemberment Plan! Sunday will hopefully be lazy, though I may have to head over to Galaxy Hut in the evening for their super-fun karaoke night. Yay for holiday Mondays!
Don: My primary thing to enjoy this weekend is “not being sick,” after having been laid low for four+ days so far by some stupid cold. I always thought alcohol killed germs but I guess I wasn’t drinking enough of it. Or I got my cold somewhere other than my mouth or liver. Ah well. I’m going to have to take it a little easy lest I relapse but I suspect I have it in me for the necessary yelling at the tv on Sunday when the playoffs start and our Nationals take on TBD! (Imagine smacktalk here about either St Louis or Oakland, depending on how it shakes out) Anyone got a preferred bar for Nats-watching?

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
