We Love Weekends: Dec 7-9

Marissa: Armed with a Livingsocial deal, a few of my friends and I are piling into the car and taking a trip out to Pev’s Paintball for an afternoon of paintballin’. Since we will be using the newest paintball sniper rifles I’m quite eager to go and try them but also hoping I don’t end up with too many bruises, be they physical ones or just a bruised ego.

Other weekend plans include checking out the Off the Walls art sale at the Corcoran and maybe some ice skating at the Sculpture Garden. Come Sunday it’s probably time for a boozy brunch somewhere new. Suggestions in the comments section are more than welcome.

Rachel: Ah, the weekend. I’m so glad it’s back. This one is a simple yet eventful one for me. It kicks off with a relaxing Friday that then transitions into a Saturday complete with my favorite party of the year: Classy Christmas. While I don’t personally celebrate the holiday (Happy almost Hannukah to my fellow tribe members), I do love a good night full of friends, fancy outfits, themed cocktails, and Christmas music. The true highlight of my weekend, though, will be Sunday night at U Street Music Hall. Virgina native Rachael Yamagata is performing and she never fails to impress. Tickets are still available.

Tom: This is the weekend we decorate our Christmas treat, so look for me to be collecting some of DC’s best Christmas ornaments, from the White House Historical Association to the 9:30 Club. We’ve also got some serious ukulele playing to do on Saturday, where we’ll learn to play at House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park.

Fedward: Our weekend starts tonight with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Wait, not at the Shakespeare Theatre, but at Deal Middle School. The rest of the weekend is all Christmas related. First we will take a trip to visit the Capitol Christmas tree. The charm of hand-made ornaments always tops the commercial glitz of the National Tree (NPH notwithstanding). On Saturday, Christmas comes early. The Social Chair and I have already exchanged gifts: tickets to the 5th Annual Repeal Day Ball. Sure, Prohibition wasn’t officially repealed in DC until March 1, 1934, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the anniversary of the 21st Amendment in style. A party thrown by bartenders means we will be sleeping in on Sunday, and in great need of the Passenger’s Hangover Brunch. Once we get our equilibrium back, we plan to buy a Christmas tree at the annual Bancroft Elementary Holiday Tree Sale. Here’s hoping the kittens don’t knock it down.

Patrick: Now that No Drink November is fully behind me I feel a great weight of sobriety lifted off my shoulders. So many plans I can make. Perhaps I’ll get all fancy and check out the Montgomery County Executive’s Ball on Sunday. Who says you have to wait til January to attend fancy galas? However with upcoming holiday parties and a certain birthday coming up maybe I’ll lay low. I feel like a Northside Social visit maybe in order.

Don: My weekend also starts tonight, with a viewing of the highly limited run of Les Liaisons Dangereuses at Shakespeare Theater Company. There only 6 productions over 4 days – with matinees on Saturday and Sunday – so it’s a get-em-while-you-can situation for this John Malkovich directed French production. Saturday I’m off to the wilds of Olney to see their production of A Christmas Carol, a one-man show take on the classic. I don’t know what I’ll do without the masks and physical humor. Somewhere in there it’ll be time for my darling with and me to go cut down our own christmas tree, a practice we’ve enjoyed over the years. We’ve been happiest with tree farms in Maryland so I think that’s where we’ll head this time.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
