We Love Weekends – March 15 to 17

Tom: This weekend starts out Friday night at Wonderland Ballroom to tape You, Me, Them, Everybody where I’ll be talking about Nationals Baseball in 2013 and the prospects of a season to remember. Saturday, I’m riding Big Stinky to raise awareness for the completion of the Met Branch Trail, and Sunday I’m doing the VASA ride with WABA assuming the weather’s not a total disaster.  Should be awesome!

Mosley: Since I was in parts of the world that don’t speak English when some of last year’s better movies came out, I’m taking advantage of two showings at the AFI in Silver Spring. Specifically, I’m going to see Lincoln and Argo. Also thinking of having dinner at my family’s favorite seafood place: Crisfield’s. Been going there since I was in the womb, and, mmmmm, I can already taste the clam chowdah! Saturday and Sunday are looking weird, weather-wise; I guess I will worry about those when I come to them. I’ve been wanting to hitting see the Phillips Collection and the Corcoran since I got back, but haven’t found the time; maybe this is the weekend to do it.

Joanna: I had big plans for this weekend but there’s a 70% chance they’ll get drowned. Still, it’s spring break for my better half, so we’ll at least try to start with a hike at Rock Creek Park on Friday when the weather looks to be pretty mild. On Saturday I’d hoped to continue our walking theme with Roosevelt Island, but since we want to walk and not swim, we may have to change our plans and see a movie. I STILL haven’t seen Silver Linings Playbook. Last time I tried to go to the newly-updated AMC Courthouse, we arrived way too late (right on time, but it was a sold-out Les Miz), so we’d probably go there and grab a beer at Ireland’s Four Courts after. They have a nice lineup of St. Paddy’s Day events all weekend. Sunday there’s an artist talk after the matinee of Manon Lescaut that looks pretty interesting. I may head over to The Kennedy Center for that, or stop by Siné for a green beer, or I may just cook up some easy Guinness and potato soup and call it a day.

Rachel: So the joke’s on me. While I’ve known St. Patrick’s Day was coming up soon, I’ve still made no plans whatsoever and I’m kinda digging that fact. Call me a party pooper, but the last thing I need right now is a holiday dedicated to drinking. I’ll just save all the fun for my birthday next week. But, in the meantime, I’m hoping to head on over to the American History Museum. The transportation exhibit is one of my favorite things in town. Plus they’ve got a Chicago Transit Authority “L” car that I like to sit in from time to time. It reminds me of my hometown Chicago and I like to get contemplative while I pass the time hanging out there. Weird, I know, but I love it. Then, Saturday night’s gonna be a heck of a night. I’m headed to Jammin’ Java for Heather Mae’s Birthday Bonanza. The night features some of the area’s finest musical talent including my friends Taylor Carson, Zia Hassan, Sara Davenport, Brian Franke, Dave Farah, and more! It’s definitely worth your time if you’re into supporting DC-area musicians. Then, if I’m feeling brave, I’ll head to Bier Baron on Sunday to catch the fantastically talented Baltimore-based duo the Bumper Jacksons perform live at 5 p.m. I first saw them play at Ebenezers Coffeehouse a few months ago and they blew me away with their traditional jazz, ragtime, and pre-war country music.

Fedward:  Saturday’s the last day for the Rose’s Luxury crew in the Temporary Works kitchen at Hogo, so you might find the Social Chair and me having one last order of crispy chicken, pork fat pho, or popcorn soup on Friday or Saturday night.  Or both.  And I can’t ignore St. Patrick’s Day.  As I’ve written before, I tend to avoid bars on the major drinking holidays like St. Paddy’s.  If you feel like celebrating my way this year, check out my guide to Irish whiskey.  Once you’ve done that, head over to the Occidental on Sunday evening for an Irish whiskey cocktail seminar, presented by Gina Chersevani on behalf of the Museum of the American Cocktail. Sunday the Social Chair and I might still end up at the Passenger as usual, but if you plan to join us be warned: they don’t have Jameson. Or Bushmills. And they can’t make an Irish Car Bomb. In fact, I’ve heard Tom Brown say on a number of occasions that he didn’t carry Irish whiskey at all, although I have recently spotted a bottle of Redbreast on the shelf.

Patrick: If you don’t follow me on Twitter or Instagram, I went to SXSW the past week and it was awesome. However now I’m paying the price with a case of the SXSW Flu. So besides lots of sleep and whatever OTC meds I can cram down my mouth, two options I’ll be looking at to get myself back into shape. The first action I will take is to get plenty of liquids (not booze), which means I’ll be looking at soup- more specifically Pho. I mean look at my name- I gotta do it. My favorite place outside of Eden Center is Pho 75, you just can’t beat it. Also I think I should start drinking green things and go jogging eventually. Thank goodness I live near both a Robeks and South Block Cafe.

Jenn: Tonight I’m heading over to the Embassy Chef Challenge, the annual fundraiser for Cultural Tourism DC, to sample the best international cuisine cooked up by our local embassy chefs. There’s also the ARTINI feature night at Jack Rose for the super talented Amy Russell’s entry in the Corcoran’s artistic cocktail contest. Friday night will see me at Local 16 for a screening of two fascinating films by Hisham Mayet of Sublime Frequencies: “Vodoun Gods on the Slave Coast” and “The Divine River.” Saturday is the Persian New Year, Nowruz, and the Freer and Sackler galleries will be celebrating all day. I’ll continue the dancing that night at Tropicalia for Slavic Soul Party. And if that all isn’t enough, it’s St. Patrick’s Day Sunday – and I think the best way to celebrate is with local Irish organization Solas Nua’s Irish Book Day. And if you feel really inspired after Sunday’s festivities, consider taking Irish classes with my friend Ronan Connolly.  Ok, ok, have a pint too! Or forget St. Paddy and head to the Howard Theater for the Sunday Burlesque Party. Nothing says Irish like pasties, right?

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
