We Love Weekends – April 19-21

Joanna: (Peeking out from behind her door) Are the tourists gone yet? Because I’m thinking of having a picnic this weekend, somewhere near the Tidal Basin. On Saturday Ghion is hosting 12 bands from 2pm to 2am. I’m too old for that, but I might drag my increasingly ancient butt out for an NYC reunion with Emily Danger, which is slated at 11pm and has a really dynamic thing going with the help of my friend Cam on violin. On Sunday I’m seeing Wallenstein at Shakespeare Theater Company and hopefully catching a few zzz’s too.

Rachel: Friday night I’ll be back at Ebenezers Coffeehouse to watch singer-songwriter Grace Pettis and her band rock out. Then Saturday night I’ve got a gig of my own at the DC Arts Center as part of the Capital City Showcase. If you’ve never been, it’s a variety show hosted by DC native Christian Hunt that brings together comedians and musicians for a night of stand-up comedy and original music. Plus — the theater at the DC Arts Center is one of those smaller black box theaters and the acoustics in there are fantastic. I don’t even mic up, I just sing without having to plug in my guitar or anything. It makes for an organic and fun performance. Then Sunday it’s back to Stoddert Field for week three of the GPCSL before the Nats head back into town for a homestand on Monday.

Rebecca: Friday I’m checking out In The Shadow at the Filmfest DC. The international film festival kicked off April 11 and runs until the 21st. There are a ton of really, really solid foreign films to check out and it’s definitely worth the tickets. Saturday after a morning footie match, I’m revisiting Union Market to see what’s changed/been added since I was last there. I’ll likely pick up some delectable goodies while I’m there. In particular, cheeses from Righteous Cheese. Sunday, I just purchased my first road bike, so I’ll be taking it for a spin in Rock Creek Park.

Katie: Do I ever slow down? Let’s be real: no. So this weekend is as jam packed as the rest of ’em. We’ve got wine club on Friday, and the theme is chilled reds, so I’m in need of some suggestions if you’ve got ’em for your favorite cold red. (Someone already claimed Chrysalis’ Sarah’s Patio Red which is my normal go-to for chilled reds.) Saturday I’m headed to brunch with a friend and we’re debating between Dino and Pulpo and while I’m up there, I need to cash in bib at PR Running (there is a $20 coupon on the back of that bad boy). Saturday evening I’m having dinner with friends and we’re hoping to grab sushi. I’m thinking Sushi Ko or Kaz. Sunday, I’m joining forces with a group of friends for a yard sale near the Marine Barracks on I St. SE, so you should totally come and check out all the adorable shoes I’m selling. Also: tons of books. All for $1. And I have really good taste in books, I’m just saying.

Fedward:  I’m cheating on you, DC.  Or at least I’m cheating on this weekend post.  The Social Chair and I are headed to Philadelphia for the weekend.  If you can stomach being that close to the city’s sports fans, you can get there easily enough on GreyhoundMegabus, or Amtrak.  We splurged (and got a sale price) on the train, so we’re heading up in relative style and comfort on Friday and returning late Sunday night.  On the docket:  Friday we’re visiting the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Foundation (which stays open late every Friday), then scooting over to the Kimmel Center for a late night performance of The Trial of Murderous Mary, presented as part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts.  One of the show’s creators and performers is Aaron Cromie, whose work has been seen here in DC at the Folger, Studio, and Shakespeare Theatre. After all that we’ll probably need some late night food. Saturday we’re visiting all the standard tourist sites (America, Fuck Yeah!), and then getting dinner at Vernick and drinks at the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company. Sunday we’re seeing the Prohibition exhibit at the Constitution Center, because of course we are.  After that we’ll head to Hop Sing Laundromat, where we’ll either be turned away at the door, get drinks, or get thrown out. Maybe even two out of three! Then we’ll stop by Lolita for dinner before heading back on the train. Oh, and at some point we’re apparently supposed to get pretzels. We might need to go back soon just to finish this trip.

Jenn: Let’s start backwards, shall we? Keep’s things interesting. The highlight of my weekend is Sunday night’s concert at U Street Music Hall with Amon Tobin. His gorgeous soundscapes are practically the soundtrack to my life, so to say I’m excited for his DJ set might be an understatement. I definitely intend to dance. Maybe I’ll return to Le Diplomate for dinner beforehand, to continue to marvel at how STARR managed to transform that old dump of a dry cleaners into a gleaming bistro. Or The Red Hen for more luscious grilled tongue (though a repeat of last time’s Galliano shots will not happen, oh no). Saturday sees me at the opposite end of the spectrum, hanging out at my local bar Red Derby for a low-key brunch, before a manic day getting my act together for my upcoming trip to Istanbul (what? yes.) and no doubt the day will start with Qualia Coffee as I’m sure Friday night will be filled with mayhem. Wow, working backwards makes for difficulty phrasing.

Tom: Like Fedward & the Social Chair, Tiff and I are heading out of DC this weekend to visit dear friends in Chicago. We’ll be cheering on a friend in the CARA 10 miler on Saturday morning, and enjoying the delicious pot roast sandwich at Mullen’s in Wrigleyville. Were we here in DC, though, this is prime picnicking weather, so it’s very possible we’d have hit Union Market for victuals, and headed to Hains Point to enjoy the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac, and the view across to Ft. McNair and the War College. There also needs to be a trip back to The Pug in the near future as Tony and Solly are working on a new spot in my part of town, and I want to make sure I know what it’s all about before next weekend’s regulatory meeting. Also, as we’re signed up for the Great Brookland Yard Sale next month, we’ll be going through all our stuff to find the best to sell. Have a great weekend everyone, and see you next week.

Mosley: I’m aiming for a low key weekend.  Friday and Saturday are pretty free of events, so maybe I’ll get out and catch some nice spring sights.  With spring flowers coming in, I imagine that the National Arboretum is looking nicer with each passing day.  Also, I’ve been wanting to get back to kayaking on the Anacostia (launching out of Bladensburg), so maybe I’ll do that on Saturday.  Sunday has my one definite plan, a photo meet-up, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, with my Flickr group DC Social.  All are welcome; you don’t even need to have a camera.

Don: I don’t have much out-and-about planned for this weekend, though we want to spend some time enjoying the warmth and not-rain. Wherever I am I’ll be listening to some of my old Game Theory albums, as I’ve just heard the bad news that frontman Scott Miller has died.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
