We Love Weekends: May 3-5

Joanna: I’ll be out of town this weekend, but were my friend Christine not getting married to an awesome guy in a cow-themed wedding (sure to be a mooving ceremony), I guess I’d be here. And I’d be attending one of local artist Dana Ellyn’s two opening receptions happening this weekend. I’d also do some massive Embassy touring – part of Passport DC’s signature events. I really hate to be missing that. Last year’s EU tours (coming up May 11) were mostly great, so this time around I was really hoping to tour the rest of the world. Alas, it’s not to be. North Carolina doesn’t count as another country, does it?

Tom: It’s opening weekend at Merriweather Post Pavilion, so that means I’ll be up in Columbia getting my metal on this weekend. Because, really, who doesn’t want to see Twisted Sister rock out and relive their best Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure memories? I’m also plotting a trip to see Iron Man 3 this weekend, but struggling with the where. AMC Courthouse doesn’t have it, so I can’t experience the cushy seats, so it’s looking like Hoffman Center if I want to trek to the burbs for IMAX 3D, or Georgetown Loews if I want to deal with being in Georgetown for a couple hours on a Sunday. Either way, it’s a metal nerd weekend.

Fedward:  Friday night the Social Chair and I will be covering the Phillips Collection’s Annual Gala After Party at the Italian Embassy (s’cuse me, Ambasciata d’Italia).  The organizers have asked me to mention that tickets are still available, so there’s still a chance for you to meet up with the two of us.  The party is scheduled to run until 1AM so there’s a good chance we won’t be awake in time for Cultural Tourism DC’s annual Around the World Embassy Tour on Saturday, which is a shame, because I haven’t been on one of those since I moved to the area.  We will have to drag ourselves out of bed eventually so we can head back to the AFI Silver, both for more silent shorts (all Buster Keaton this time) and also for Blazing Saddles, part of the Life Achievement Award Retrospective for Mel Brooks.  If we weren’t doing that, we’d walk over to the Armed Forces Retirement Home for the Spring Fling.  And if we weren’t doing either of those things, we might have time for Free Comic Book Day.  Saturday will be busy, in other words.  Sunday we’ll observe Cinco de Mayo by not going anywhere even remotely Mexican, which I think means we’ll just spend all day at the Passenger drinking gin and whiskey.  I will admit this pig roast at Impala Cantina sounds interesting though.

Rachel: Friday night I’m being lame and taking a much needed night to stay in and sleep. Saturday night will be super fun and I’ve had this date in my calendar marked off for what feels like forever… it’s Taylor Carson‘s CD release show at IOTA! If you haven’t heard Taylor’s new album With Innocence then you’re missing out. Head on over to iTunes stat and get your fill of these incredibly well-written catchy songs. Sunday, it’s back to good ol’ Stoddert for the GPCSL.

Alexia: Friday night I’m playing my first show as a member of E.D. Sedgwick at a house party in Petworth. Super stoked! Saturday I’m braving the DC 101 Chili Cookoff to see my childhood grunge heroes Soundgarden tear up the stage. Sunday heading to a barbeque/Showgirls-watching party in Bloomingdale, and then over to the monthly karaoke party at Galaxy Hut!

Don: Apparently I’m starting off a month of dog entertainment, but who can blame me? I don’t know how any sensible person passes up The Running of the Chihuahuas… well okay, maybe sensible isn’t the word I’m looking for here. But it looks like silly fun and I can take my dog. Beyond that and some other out-of-doors activities I’m just fundraising for next weekend’s Walk for the Animals. Now I just need a Maryland-based dog charity for the weekend of the 18th, I guess.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
