Hot Ticket: Firefly Music Festival @ The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway, Dover, DE, 6/21-6/23/13

The second annual Firefly Music Festival kicks off in Dover, Del., today. As of press time, the festival still has some single day tickets left for each day — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — of the festival.

As someone who moved to Delaware as a teenager and attended the University of Delaware as an undergrad, I’m fairly impressed that my former state has become host to a contender for the largest outdoor indie music festival in these parts. Potential traffic aside, it’s usually an easy hop from DC to Dover, so it may be something to consider for the weekend if there are bands or DJs playing that you might want to see. We have the perfect weather for it this weekend, after all.

Highlights Friday include Delaware’s own Spinto Band, new psych outfit Django Django, British songstress Ellie Goulding, hip hop legends Public Enemy, Toronto new wavers Dragonette, and Scottish cool DJ dude Calvin Harris. The Red Hot Chili Peppers headline. Firefly announced a lineup change Thursday, replacing Earl Sweatshirt of Odd Future with Schoolboy Q.

On Saturday, you can catch the young and firey Blondfire, Oxford post-britpoppers A Silent Film, Scottish synthpop band Chvrches (who have sold out the Black Cat Friday night), art punkers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (who made a splash at Sweetlife Festival last month), and headliners Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty, really!

For Sunday, Firefly recently announced another lineup change, as folk rock favorites The Lumineers are unable to appear. (They are replaced by Ben Harper.) You also can see Passion Pit (who also did well at Sweetlife Festival), Amanda Palmer, Vampire Weekend and headliners Foster the People. Quite a day!

The festival is also offering a diverse range of things to do besides watch bands and dance to DJs. (There’s something else worth doing?) Seriously, however, folks can visit a Dogfish Head Brewery and enjoy Firefly Ale in air conditioning. Or pair some wine and cheese at wine bar Vineyard.

You can relax in a couple of hammock hangouts, one of which will offer silent films in black and white outdoors for your viewing pleasure. You can catch acoustic artists not on the main bill at The Coffee House, while you drink some Bearclaw Coffee. You also can play some Gibson Guitars at their tent or find your sole mate with a specially designed shoe by Toms at the Toms Style Your Stole tent, go now to check out more about this.

Additional DJs also will spin music all day in The Thicket, Firefly’s silent, headphone dance party.

Your intrepid We Love DC music critic will attend and attempt to critique the festival a bit via Twitter (bandwidth permitting) before filing a review here next week. Hope to see you there!
