The Washington Post has seen fit to truncate its RSS feed to only an excerpt, and that requires you to now open the story in a web browser. It’s a monetization issue; we get that. But it’s quite frustrating for those of us who have developed a reading (and saving) habit in our RSS readers. But there’s a solution: FullTextRSSFeed Dot COM! (sing “DOT COM!” it makes it more exciting). This gets your reader back with full articles and what not. You can choose your feed and run it through their tool, but we’ve provided some:

The Examiner is reporting that Metro is looking at a virtual tunnel between the Farragut stations. Unlike London and New York, these won’t be underground tunnels connecting the stations. In fact, no major construction will be required for this tunnel. The technology operation would allow patrons to move between the two Farragut Stations (West and North), in effect creating a transfer at Farragut Square. The tunnel itself would be leaving the station and walking a block to the other one, but it could help alleviate congestion at Metro Center and reduce some commute times.

TBD is reporting that Arlington County Police will be setting up DUI checkpoints this weekend. Where these will be we don’t know, but in the past they’ve set up these on US-50 west of Washington Blvd and in the Clarendon areas. Plan for a designated driver and if you drink too much, take a cab. There’s already enough crazy drivers this time of year without adding alcohol to the mix.

Making your own Victory Garden isn’t for everyone. It may be that you live in an apartment or you simply don’t have time to do your own gardening, or perhaps you are a serial killer of plants from the garden center. Regardless, this does not prohibit you from joining the local food revolution. A simple creation by small farmers has spread all over the country and you can now join CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) programs, or farm shares, and get fresh produce every week from a local farmer delivered to you.

A Little History…

This started as a way for farmers to mitigate risk. Back in the pre-dust bowl days, farmers would borrow a large sum of money from the bank to procure their seed for the year with their harvest as collateral. This was before the fractional reserve system, so that cash was tied up in the farm from spring until harvest. Well, in 1930, the harvest didn’t do so well, and a lot of that money disappeared. Banks failed. Farms closed down.

What does this mean for you? Well, a CSA is a way for you to purchase a “share” in the season. It allows for the farmer to mitigate risk. It’s investing in your food, if you want to look at it that way. You pay in to a certain share size, say a two-person share, for $500. Let’s say the farmer sells 400 shares for the year. That is a cash influx at the beginning of the season of $200,000 that allows the farmer to buy seed, fertilizer, tools, potting soil, hoophouses, and other things. You are paid back your investment in product, in this case, vegetables, fruits and eggs. You eat the profits.

The Basics

"Bull Run Farm"
courtesy of "boboroshi"

N.B.: I personally have been a member of Bull Run Farm in Haymarket since 2006. I’ve also been a cow-share member of Over The Grass Farm for the last 3 years, so many of the things I discuss in this article will be specific to my experiences or Tom and Tiffany’s experiences (who belong to Great Country Farms in Bluemont).

About this time of year (some farms start in January) you can sign up for a share. Each farm does this differently. Bull Run has three share sizes: A one person ($420), a two-person ($560) and a family of four ($1125). On top of that you can add eggs in half-dozen increments ($50) and fruit ($90). These prices are for the entire season. A season runs from late May/Early June until the Late October. In each week, you’ll get whatever vegetables and herbs are currently ripe from the farm. Quality and quantity will vary depending on a number of factors including weather, rainfall, and pests. You can see what last year’s vegetables at Bull Run were and get a good idea of what will be coming to harvet at given times of the year.

Getting Your Vegetables

"CSA Week five"
courtesy of "A. Drauglis Furnituremaker"

Depending on the farm, you will either pickup your vegetables or have them delivered to your door. Many farms have pickups in various locations both downtown and in the suburbs. When I lived at New Jersey & Q, NW I would pickup on Tuesdays at a corner east of Dupont Circle. It would look very much like the photo above. A row of bins, each with a different vegetable, and a board stating how many you could take. On some weeks, there are additional things available, such as honey from the beehives on the farm, or additional apples.

Pros…

Besides the obvious pro of getting fresh and organic fruits and vegetables every week, these are things that I believe are the positives about this system:

You learn to cook with the seasons – Modernity has provided us with some great things, such as bananas in January, Asparagus in November, etc. But that’s now how local food works. You will get things in your share that you will have no idea what to do with in the kitchen, and that is part of the fun of it. If you don’t cook much already, this may be a bit much for you to handle.

Cut down your footprint – Think about what methods of travel an out of season piece of fruit from Argentina or Chile takes to get to your local supermarket. Now think how much fossil fuel was used in that transportation. This helps cut that way down.

Learn about the local region – You quickly find out what grows at what times, the issues that affect farming in this area, and meet some really nice people too. For me, I ended up with a huge amount of 12 different varieties of Virginia apples in the fall and lots (and I do mean lots) of Pok Choi in the spring. I’ve got a few garlic bulbs left to last me through March.

It’s healthier – Local, pesticide/herbicide-free food is better for you and the environment. There’s various articles documenting how local honey can help alleviate allergies by building up slow resistances to local pollens. And it’s nice to get some fresh mountain air every once in a while.

Things to be aware of

You can’t get vegetables out of season from a CSA – Want a tomato in June? Probably not going to happen unless your CSA does greenhouse growing as well. The same with Asparagus in October.

Vegetables aren’t always pretty – Some people seem to get really bent out of shape over a vegetable that looks like it just came out of the ground. These are not going to be winning a Vegetable Beauty Pageant nor should they care to. They will be fresh and delicious and you will need to wash them.

A bad year = less food from the farm – You are sharing risk with the farmer. If it doesn’t rain, some crops may not work at all. Last spring being so wet affected root crops. Other crops did great. It’s the risk you take.

Change of habits - Most Americans plan a menu and then go out and purchase the food they need. With this system, you get your food supply once a week, and then plan what you can cook with it and make a run to the store for any ingredients you don’t have on hand. This can be daunting at first, but you learn to work with constraints as opposed to fighting the system.

Where’s The Beef (and the Milk)?

"Cider making at bull run mountain farm"
courtesy of "boboroshi"

The farms have many events during the year that are outside the standard weekly flow. With Bull Run, they do a cider press and a gleaning (when share holders can walk the fields and pick up whatever is left). Great Country has various events all year (including a Potato dig and Pumpking tossing). You can even get your Christmas Tree from Great Country farms. They hand you a saw and point you to the field.

But what about protein? Unlike Polyface Farms (profiled in Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”) most of the local farms don’t do meat on premises. However, with Bull Run, Tom, Tiffany and I just purchased half a cow from the Rudder farm in the Shenandoah, butchered to our specifications by Blue Ridge Meats, and picked up at Bull Run Farm. 250 pounds of fresh, local beef that will last us most of the year.

Other farms do various a la carte options (e.g. Over The Grass Farm) and offer cow-shares for raw milk.

Where Do I Find a Farm?

The best bet is to look at LocalHarvest.org and search for CSAs by your zip code. There are a lot of CSAs in the DC Metro area to choose from. Find one that works for you and happy eating!!

Spider Kelly’s has reopened after a multi-week closing to double the size of the location and, apparently, is now a veritable Bro-topia of epic proportions. From the Thrillist email announcement:

…the formerly sit-down, slim galley bought out the three adjacent storefronts and transformed into a sprawling bastion of athletic boozyness; its all-new massive, wrap-around diamond plate main bar’s ringed by 25 flatscreens, dart boards, pool/shuffleboard tables, and arcade rigs like Golden Tee and Big Buck Hunter…

Also present are is a new menu, thirteen beers on draft (as opposed to the previous bottle-only policy) and all sorts of kitschy cocktails such as “Bourbon Cruiser” and “Sex On Wilson”. They’ve got some specials for you to try out on Thursdays during the Tournament: $2 Miller Lite, $3 Craft beers and $3 margaritas/mojitos.

Our friends at Bread For The City let us know about a City Blossoms new garden project happening in NW on Marion Street. They are turning an empty lot into an “intergenerational community garden with education opportunities for children, youth and adults.” They’re looking for a few good workers to help them build it out.

There will be vegetables, herbs, native plantings, butterfly gardens, fruit, rain gardens and more that will be used to host workshops for area residents and schools. All produce will be shared freely through workshop participation but first year yields are not expected to produce enough to donate to places like Bread For The City.

Urban gardens are an important part of neighborhoods, not only for improving the look of an area but also for encouraging local food production. On a larger scale, cities like Detroit are turning huge swaths of abandoned housing into semi-rural areas. Eat local!

Yesterday’s request for Georgetown to be Freed from the Tyranny of all the poor people in DC got us thinking, and we’ve decided to help them out by writing their Declaration of Independence for them:

When, in the course of Late Night Shots, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political and social bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the superior and fucking awesome station to which the Laws of Nature and their daddy’s employment entitle them, an indecent molestation of the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that Smith Point is far better than any piece of shit you have east of Rock Creek park, and that us Georgetowners are endowed by our bank accounts with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and not having to deal with poor, homeless people on Friday night. That to secure these rights, we are going to kick your sad ass to the curb and erect (dude, you said erect) checkpoints where we will only allow real cool people into Georgetown. The rest of you can piss off.

Signed, the douchebags of Georgetown, esquires.

Good luck in your endeavors to rid Georgetown of those less fortunate than you. I beg forgiveness from the ghosts of our Founding Fathers for the above egregious bastardization of the Declaration of Independence.

Looks like the location owner Andrew Stewart had selected in Clarendon for the new Dr. Dremo’s fell through due to costs associated with construction and bringing the building up to code. There’s a new location in discussion and Mr. Stewart is negotiating a lease, but this means that it will be even longer before we can sample the 30+ beers in a rock and roll garage setting whilst playing beer pong, shuffle board and pool simultaneously. (That is not snark. I spent every Thursday night of about 4 years at the old Dr. Dremo’s. I miss it dearly.)

With all the snow of late, thinking about starting seeds is probably the last thing on most people’s minds, but we are rapidly approaching the time in which we can start planting things in the ground. We are already a bit past the time to start seeds indoors for certain plants. This doesn’t mean that you can’t, but you’ll not be able to transfer them into the ground at the same time as other plants. Check out the Almanac planting times for Washington DC. There’s also lots of reading material at the Virginia Cooperative Extension.

As we’ve come out of the frozen tundra of the Snowfecta, we might think “oh thank goodness winter is over and we won’t have to worry about a blizzard for a while.” While you may be right in that regard, we’d be missing the larger point: A lot of people were not prepared to handle this in any way, shape or form.

We witnessed Hipsters who were lined up outside the closed P street Whole Foods almost rioted as if someone had just told them that Fleet Foxes sucked. The shelves in produce aisles city wide were bare. There were major lines at area supermarets. It was so bad we even ran out of condoms. With some of the power outages, people ran out of firewood and burned furniture to stay warm. It as a lot of smart, well-educated people with good paying jobs in a predicament they simply did not plan for.

The old proverb rings true: “He who fails to plan, plans to fail”

So what could people have done to be better prepared for this storm? We gave you some ideas on snow-specific preparation before, but what about things other than snowstorms? Well the good news is there’s things you can do that will let you be prepared for a lot of similar elements in disasters, from losing a job or a water main break all the way up to an earthquake or massive solar storm.

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

There are different types of disasters. Small disasters affect only you or your neighborhood. For example, you lose your job, a family member or loved one dies, a water main breaks, etc. There’s a 99.9999% change you’ll experience one if not more than one of these in your life. Medium scale events are more regional, such as the snowfecta (three storms is better than one!) or a hurricane. It affects more people, but generally is easy to pull out from. Large scale events are less likely to happen, such as major earthquakes (Haiti, Chile) or massive solar storms that could knock out large chunks of the electrical grid. These scale events are far less likely to occur, but their impact would be massive. We’re not going to discuss Red Dawn or Zombie scenarios here. If you want to go off on that wagon, there are a ton of websites catering to your every need.

Why would this be the case? The Just-in-Time system is to blame. As we saw in the snow storms, most consumables get used up pretty quickly. Very few stores have more than 3 days of inventory on hand. If the semis aren’t rolling in with new supplies, then product doesn’t make it to the consumer. In this case we end up with a negative supply shock and, in some cases, price gouging occurs. Many people think that this should be the Federal Government’s responsiblity to handle these kinds of situations, but even FEMA says on their Ready.gov site:

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer.

Think that a week or longer is not realistic? Look at the Kentucky Ice Storm of last winter. Or look at Hurricane Katrina, or Hurricane Isabel. After Isabel, my family was without power for two weeks after Isabel and they live in the suburbs in Hampton Roads. While we always grew up prepared (Coast Guard family) and they had water and food and cooked on the grill and camp stove, they had to walk to get ice from the National Guard after they ran out. They now have a generator capable of running a freezer and some other appliances as well as enough fuel to handle two weeks.

This boils down to the fact that the higher the impact a disaster has, the lower the probability has, but at the end of the day, there’s some basics everyone needs: Water, Food, and Shelter. You cover those and you’ll survive. You may be miserable, but you won’t become a statistic.

Okay, where do I begin?

FEMA’s Ready.gov site is a great place to start. Their three step guide is a great basic overview of what you need to start. You need:

An emergency kit

A family plan

Being informed about the threats you are preparing for

If you go camping or hiking you might have a lot of these elements in an emergency kit lying about your closet or garage: flashlight, candles, matches, backpacking stove, first aid kit, radio, whistle, baby wipes, etc. For those of you who laugh at baby wipes, when you reach day 3 of no shower, you will think them the greatest creation of all time.

With power outages, also remember that networks go down. You won’t be able to use your credit card in some cases. You’ll need cash. Having some cash at home at all times for these situations is just smart business.

Water can be purified with household bleach and a medicine dropper. You should have enough food/water/etc. to take care of your pets. If you have medical needs (prescriptions, ongoing treatments for things such as diabetes) you should make plans to have enough of those medicines on hand to cover you. Rotate through them.

Plan wise, there are a lot of alert services all over the country that will send out text alerts. You should have a plan in case the power goes out. What happens if it’s winter? How long can you heat your current location?

Finally you should inform yourself about the threats you believe you need to prepare for and create a plan according to those threats. There are many different elements but there’s a strong base of similarities between disasters of different types. Figure out those contingencies and plan for them.

Beyond the Basic Kit

Do you have a way to cook without power? An outdoor propane or charcoal grill will cut it, or a camp stove. Have enough fuel for those?

Do you have a way to heat without power? Woodstoves and fireplaces are ideal, but without firewood, they’re big metal and brick blocks. A generator can run a space heater, but that’s not very efficient.

Do you have entertainment options for yourself and also for young children? Again, a small generator will give you enough power to power up a laptop or a dvd player, which will be enough to distract everyone with a DVD. Board games can also help. Starting at the wall is where serious cabin fever begins.

From here it’s figuring out what you’re planning for and building upon your base. There are tons of resources online and way too much to cover in any one article. Books have been written on alternate power systems alone. Go do some research and build your plan.

Isn’t this all a bit much?

Some of you might think that this is crazy talk. Why would you ever do this work for something that may not happen? Well, it’s insurance. I have auto insurance, but I don’t plan to get into a car wreck. I have life insurance, but I don’t plan to die tomorrow. I have renter’s insurance, but don’t plan on being robbed soon. We have insurance for things that are, in many ways, completely out of our control. I look at being prepared as disaster insurance. I don’t look for bad situations, but if one arises, I’ve got a personal policy developed and implemented to cover some basic needs. The alternative is that you may become a refuge at either your friend’s house, the local shelter, or in a trailer city.

Further involvement

If you want to get further training and more involved in your local community, check out the CERT teams in your county or city:

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team): DC | Arlington | Alexandria | Fairfax | Loudoun | Prince George | Montgomery

Stay safe!

Our friends over at Prince of Petworth recently asked the question “Why does a swimming pool come out of my faucet?” and an anonymous commenter delivered the news: From February 1st until May 17th, DC WASA changed the disinfectant used in its water treatment process from chloarmine (NH2Cl) to chlorine.

Chloramine is used for most of the year because it is far more stable than free chlorine and lacks the smell of chlorine. Chloramine is toxic to certain animals (e.g. fish) and is one of the reasons you need to age the water a few days or use product to make it safe. However, Chloramine is not as effective at sanitizing as free Chlorine. So WASA is effectively shocking the system.

You can read the DC WASA press release for more info

Were you (un)fortunate enough to have not heard about the snow emergency (declared Sunday evening, aka Valentines Day) and got smacked with a nice big $250 ticket for parking on a snow emergency route on February 15th? I don’t know about you but I sure wasn’t checking to see if there was a snow emergency that night. Well, City Council members Brown and Wells are fighting in your corner to have those forgiven.
DC’s property assessments for 2011 are coming in way down from 2010. Residential is down an average of 3.7 percent and commercial property is down 10.6 percent. While this is good for the taxpayer in general (lower value means lower tax amount) about 22,000 residents will be paying higher taxes (by an average of $345) due to new legislation. While those looking to sell may not be happy about this, we’re doing far better than some other metropolitan areas that are seeing drops of up to 25%. For once, we are definitely not California Dreamin’.

I’ve been following Jack Landers’ blog for quite a while now, enjoying his mix of politics, firearms and hunting. Last fall he started offering a class for locals in Charlottesville about locavore hunting: those who want to get their food locally in a sustainable manner. The ultimate in free-range, no hormone or CAFO-raised meat? Well, in this part of the country, that would be whitetail deer. And that’s what the hunting class is set up to discuss. Two jam packed days of deer history, anatomy, ecology, gun safety, field butchering, cooking and more.

I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy venison or be able to handle the butchering. Could I actually take the responsibility of a start-to-finish approach to the meat that I eat? Walking into Wegmans or Whole Foods or Giant and picking up a steak is easy. It’s clean. It’s prepared. You don’t even see the old style butcher shop half cow hanging as they worked on it. Would this push me towards a closer relationship with the food I eat or turn me into a vegetarian-biased eater?

The goal was to leave Charlottesville after these two days confident that I could go out and actually harvest a deer and take responsibility for it at some point next hunting season. So after my gig at the 9:30 Club on Friday night, I packed up my car with my clothes, camera and Winchester Model 70 rifle and headed down to Charlottesville.

(Warning: some of the photos inside show the butchering process)

The class was a mix of people from all walks of life. There was the cinematographer and cooking aficionado from Brooklyn, the marine from DC, The orthopaedic surgeon from Richmond and his son (a student at Brown), the anthropology student from GWU and a local guy from Albemarle county whose occupation I did not catch. Starting at 9am we reviewed a year in the life of a whitetail deer in the Virginia area and also discussed their massive population boom since the 1970s. Most predators of deer in the eastern woodlands have been removed since then and now we have the problem of too large a herd of deer. This means one thing in a bad winter: starvation. There simply isn’t enough vegetable matter that contains the nutrients (protein and calcium) they need to survive the winter in those numbers.

The First Day

Jack started hunting and eating venison for simple economics: he needed to feed his family consisting of his wife and two children. Having grown up in a partially vegetarian household, he wanted to confront eating meat head on and take responsibility for his actions as a meat eater.

After going over extensive information about our quarry, we turned to firearms and firearms safety. Most people in the class had some experience with a firearm, but I was the only one who owned and brought a hunting rifle along. We packed up the van and headed out to the George Washington National Forest rifle range for lunch and some target practice.

Jack’s friend Paul joined us at the entrance to the Forest and shuttled us up the almost impassable road in his Jeep. We started with everyone shooting ten rounds through a .22LR Marlin. .22LR (for Long Rifle) is a small bullet, not capable of taking a deer (nor legal to do so) and has very little recoil. It’s a perfect round for everyone to get accustomed to the concepts of shooting. We fired five rounds from a bench rest and five standing offhand.

After that we moved over to the larger caliber rifles. Most were either chambered in .308 or .30-’06, which are both significant rifle calibers capable of taking almost any game east of the Mississippi. Everyone got a chance to see how well they could do at 100 yards and 150 yards on standard targets and life sized deer targets. The important thing is to ensure that you hit the right part of the deer as to avoid any undue suffering and ensure a quick kill. After a long (and cold) afternoon out at the range, we headed back into town for a night of relaxation.

The Second Day

The next day started with more class time, discussing tactics, tracking, public land hunting, and things that can go wrong in the hunt, as well as contingency plans to handle those events. We then headed out to a nearby location to participate in the butchering of a deer that had been shot that morning. Instead of relying on the luck of a hunt or for roadkill from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the class worked on a deer from a local deer farm in Charlottesville.

This was where I believed I would probably lose my lunch, but instead it was not difficult at all. The smell was no worse than a barn or the zoo and we each took turns skinning and butchering the animal. Jack teaches a method to actually harvest the entire deer in the field, and not have to carry back a whole carcass. We harvested the entire deer, taking some of the meat that was not ideal for human consumption to turn into dog food.

One of the class participants took a small piece and tried it raw, and most of the class (not this guy) followed suit. Jack stated that was a first for his teaching career and also declined to partake. Note: When the guy running the class says “no thanks”, I follow suit. You can see more extensive photos of the butchering process in my Flickr set for the weekend.

We returned to Charlottesville and went up to a commercial kitchen to prepare dinner of that day’s harvest.

The only other time I’ve eaten Venison in the past was on a Boy Scout campout years ago. It was over cooked, tough, and tasted funny. The taste was explained by Jack as lazy butchering. If you leave the deer hanging for a few days in your garage, it will not taste good. This meat that we harvested that afternoon was delicious and sweet and very similar to roast beef in texture. It exhibited none of the taste that I associated with “gaminess” in the last venison I tried.

After a nice shared meal everyone cleaned up and then headed back to their respective place of origin to become another of the hunters who want to be responsible for their own food. This was not about “Trophy Bucks” or things of that nature, but simply of getting closer to the harvesting and processing of the meat that we eat.

Jack is looking at offering future classes, and you can follow his blog, read more about hunting and contact him at rule-303.blogspot.com/.
