<p>Photo Credit: Maryanne Drury</p>
<p>The same love felt in Billy Strayhorn&#8217;s ode to the of the rails of New York City in the jazz standard &#8220;Take the &#8216;A&#8217; Train&#8221; is still alive and well today a few hundred miles south here in Washington.  While the Duke Ellington orchestra is no longer around to send their musical echoes into the night, recent Tampa transplant and current Alexandria resident Jason Mendelson aims to commemorate DC&#8217;s own transportation network with his very own collection of songs for each (and eventually) every Metro station.</p>
</div>
<div>Embarking last November on his epic Metro musical mission, Mendelson has already released the first volume of Metro songs with the second already in the works, which you can listen to here.  While the flashing red lights along the edge of the Metro platform will likely never double for footlights, WeLoveDC had a chance to recently talk to the man behind the music himself.</div>
<div><span id="more-74850"></span></div>
<div><strong>WeLoveDC: What was the inspiration behind commemorating all of our Metro stations musically?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>Jason Mendelson: I wrote National first, because I thought it was a really interesting story &#8211; the whole controversy over the expensive and ridiculous renaming that that Georgia Congressman Bob Barr demanded. After that, it occurred to me that all the stations probably have an interesting story worth writing about if you look hard enough. So what started as a gimmick has turned out to be a great educational experience for me as a relatively new resident.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>WLDC: So far your songs are fairly diverse in genre, what is the key for picking the right style for each station?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>JM: I often try to capture the feel of the place. When I started writing about the U.S. Botanic Garden for &#8220;Federal Center SW,&#8221; I thought of the Simon &amp; Garfunkel song where they list a bunch of spices or plants, and tried to write something that sounded like that melody. The Van Dorn Street Station is right next to a parcel delivery hub, so I imagined a tired driver at the end of the day, and went right for the blues, which strikes me as a real working man&#8217;s music. The history of the &#8220;Bonus March at Federal Triangle&#8221; was begging for a more aggressive approach, hence the gated snare hits and distorted guitar.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>Sometimes it&#8217;s just random to the point of being nonsensical, though, like the country sound on &#8220;Braddock Road,&#8221; or the old swing of &#8220;L&#8217;Enfant Plaza.&#8221; An even bigger source of inspiration is my vast pool of musical influences. &#8220;Pentagon&#8221; is a tip of the hat to Stereolab, who also uses vibraphones and 5/4 time. On &#8220;East Falls Church,&#8221; Robinson Lee Earle and I decided from the start to go for a sound like Belle &amp; Sebastian&#8217;s, given the topic of pretentious teenagers in love who aren&#8217;t quite sure how to proceed with their first roll in the hay after riding the Metro back from their date in D.C. &#8220;Ice Skating at the Archives&#8221; is a jazz waltz featuring area musicians Seth Kibel (flute) and Oren Levine (piano), which made it one of the most fun to record.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>WLDC: Have you had the chance to do a Metro &#8220;tour&#8221; and perform your songs at their respective stations?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>JM: Since playing a radio or instrument without headphones is against the Metro rules, I don&#8217;t dare try that. Unfortunately, the MetroPerforms program seems to be on indefinite hiatus. I think it would be really fun, so I hope they bring it back, but I understand they have bigger fish to fry at the moment.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>WLDC: There are 86 stations throughout the system, have you ridden the rails and visited every one?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>JM: I&#8217;ve been to a lot of the stations, but probably not quite half. So, eventually, I&#8217;ll run out of material and have to take a field trip. I&#8217;m actually looking forward to that. I&#8217;ve already started reaching out to community groups and gathering anecdotal research via emails, namely Edgewood and Silver Spring. My wife and I met up with Emily Haha (www.emilyhaha.com), who has a very similar project and goal, to visit all of the stations and blog about them.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>WLDC: While you moonlight as a musician, your day job is as a tax analyst&#8230;ever break out the guitar at work?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>JM: Not often. Tax people aren&#8217;t typically into things that are, you know, fun, but I am lucky to work with a pretty cool group. In fact, there is an unusually high number of musicians in our department, so about once every few months we have &#8220;Six String Lunch,&#8221; where several of us book a conference room, bring a guitar and our lunch, and swap songs and stories.</div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>WLDC: Of course, I have to ask what your favorite Metro station is?</strong></div>
<div><strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div>JM: That&#8217;s like asking a parent to pick a favorite child &#8211; I have one, but I won&#8217;t tell!</div>

<p>Two years ago Congress enacted the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and created the Social Innovation Fund.  The fund aims to improve the lives of people in low-income communities by mobilizing public and private resources to grow promising, innovative community-based solutions that have evidence of compelling impact in three areas of priority need: economic opportunity, healthy futures, and youth development.</p>
<p>However, although the Act may have been signed in to law in Washington, DC, its national focus has left room for improvement in the District itself.  The <a href="http://dcsocialinnovation.org/" target="_blank">DC Social Innovation Project </a>(DCSIP) hopes to bridge this gap.</p>
<p>Co-founded by former Akin Gump attorney Darius Graham and attorney Omar Hashmi, DCSIP fosters social innovation through two different initiatives.  The first, the Community Lab, grants program provides $1,500 grants to neighborhood associations, community groups, and schools in DC to implement a small scale, high-impact community project.  The second, the Bright Idea Challenge, enlists 18-35 year olds in the DC area to propose creative social ventures that address a local issue, with the two best ideas receiving up to $10,000 in funding and other pro bono services to help them launch their venture.</p>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>For those curious about the organization, DCSIP has scheduled its launch party next Wednesday, June 8th at <a href="http://www.funxion.com/" target="_blank">Funxion</a> from 6-9pm.  You can register for the event <a href="http://dcsiplaunch.eventbrite.com" target="_self">here</a>.</div>

<p><em>Last weekend Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) sat down with We Love DC for conversation over a number of topics particularly  focusing on the recent federal budget negotiations and the resulting protests.</em></p>
<p>Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is still angry.  After weeks of negotiations between the White House and both Congressional Republicans and Democrats over the federal government budget narrowly averted a shutdown, Norton believes the District became a pawn in the negotiations with the inclusion of two policy riders in the budget agreement.  These riders banned the District from using local funds to provide abortions primarily for low-income residents and authorized the continuation of the school voucher program which helps pay for private school tuition.  &#8221;Congress is too busy messing with the DC code,&#8221; said Norton.</p>
<p><span id="more-69285"></span>Norton blames a schism between the White House and House of Representatives Democrats during budget negotiations for the final trade: a lessening of the dollar value of the budget cuts in exchange for changes to policy which included the two District-specific riders.  The main goal of Democrats during the negotiations was to &#8220;keep health care out of it,&#8221; said Norton.  She also credits the &#8220;expert bargaining of [Speaker of the House John] Boehner&#8221; and the lack of bargaining by the Democrats over the 48 votes needed to pass the budget agreement after Republican defections.  &#8221;The White House had a card and they never played it,&#8221; said Norton.</p>
<p>Despite relations with the White House which have been perceived as healthy, Norton acknowledged that &#8220;other things have gotten in the way, like the economy,&#8221; of a meaningful and productive relationship with the Obama Administration.  Norton has been working to improve this relationship by establishing new procedures with the White House to discuss the issues of the District.</p>
<p>For the Congresswoman, compounding the problem of the renewal of the school voucher program is the proposed method to pay for it.  With no additional funds in the House Republican&#8217;s Fiscal Year 2012 Budget Resolution to pay for the renewed school voucher program, the budget proposes elimination via means-testing of the funding for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program in order to offset the additional cost.  DCTAG provides college tuition assistance for District residents in order to simulate the in-state tuition programs of large state university systems throughout the country.  Norton worries that elimination of the program will cause families with children to &#8220;move out of the District to Maryland or Virginia where they can take advantage of in-state tuition.&#8221;</p>
<p><a title="2011 04 11 - 7907 - Washington DC - DC Rights Protest - Yvette Alexander" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25622716@N02/5611853949"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5065/5611853949_8f471e7402.jpg" alt="Photo courtesy of " /></a><br />

<small>courtesy of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/25622716@N02/">&#8216;thisisbossi&#8217;</a></small></p>
<p>Congresswoman Norton of course is not the only person who is angry.  The resulting rally and protest of the budget deal on April 11th <a title="Mayor, Councilmembers arrested in budget-related rally" href="http://www.welovedc.com/2011/04/11/mayor-councilmembers-arrested-in-budget-related-rally/" target="_blank">led to the arrest of forty-one individuals</a> including DC Mayor Vincent Gray as well as Councilmembers Muriel Bowser, Yvette Alexander, Tommy Wells, Sekou Biddle, Michael A. Brown, and Council Chair Kwame Brown and brought additional attention to the issues facing the District.  &#8221;Arrests are exquisitely important,&#8221; said Norton echoing her remembrance and direct involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s.  Norton feels that Congress will not take the issues of the District seriously without the type of vocal protest demonstrated on Constitution Avenue because &#8220;these people are not accountable to us.&#8221;  However the message that she wants to resonate among those considering participation is that all they have to do is &#8220;show up.&#8221;  &#8221;DC Vote has done a miraculous job of getting people to show up,&#8221; said Norton but &#8220;we need a continuing consciousness raising in the city&#8221; to continue the momentum of the recent protests.</p>
