Work Starts on Union Station Bike Center

Union Station Construction

The Union Station driveway by 1st St NE (directly above the Metro station) has been fenced off and is ready to be dug up for the upcoming Union Station Bicycle Center, a futuristic-looking glass-and-steel dome beside the Metro with secure bike racks, changing rooms, and storage lockers for DC bicyclists. DDOT expects to have the Center finished by next spring.

Update: OK, I might have gotten a bit excited; now I’m not sure if this is actually work on the bike center or if it’s just part of repaving 1st St NE, seeing as how DDOT doesn’t have anything new regarding groundbreaking for the bike center.

Update: Thanks to commenter Justin, who points us to this Washington Business Journal story that confirms, it is indeed the Union Station Bicycle Center!

Roving Asian mendicant, can occasionally be seen wandering the streets of downtown Washington, muttering unintelligible gibberish to passers-by while pushing a “bag lady” shopping cart full of old blankets, American flags, soda cans, and healthy secondhand snacks from organic food shop dumpsters. Used to live in a cardboard box at 16th and K but the rent was too expensive.
