Foggy Bottom Escalator Backup

(Thanks to peroty for the mobile photo and heads-up)

If you’re aiming to get into or out of Foggy Bottom Metro station on the Orange Line this morning, be warned that at the moment two escalators are closed, and the only open escalator is going up. This, and one broken platform escalator, make getting out difficult, and getting in pretty much impossible (unless you like lining up for the elevator).

Alternatives: Farragut West, or Rosslyn + blue bus or 38B. We have, of course, been here before.

Deal with it.

Roving Asian mendicant, can occasionally be seen wandering the streets of downtown Washington, muttering unintelligible gibberish to passers-by while pushing a “bag lady” shopping cart full of old blankets, American flags, soda cans, and healthy secondhand snacks from organic food shop dumpsters. Used to live in a cardboard box at 16th and K but the rent was too expensive.

  1. I came through there about 1/2 hour ago and two were available, just not running. At least today was a low volume passenger day.

  2. Every day this station is a total cluster.

I don’t understand how with a station that’s as busy as Foggy Bottom keeping the escalators running isn’t top priority.

  3. Wasn’t it Mitch Hedberg who said “Escalators can never be out of service. They can only become stairs.” I’m not sure I understand how two escalators stopping puts them completely out of service…
