The Initiative for Architecture and Design on Film will be screening the latest documentary, Contemporary Days: Robin and Lucienne Day Design the UK. Robin and Lucienne Day transformed British design after World War II with modern furnishings and abstract textiles, yet, all the while remaining sensible in their approach.  The film follows the Day’s personal and professional lives over the course of their careers – spanning more than 70 years.

The film premieres at 7:30 PM on May 15 at the National Geographic Museum’s Grosvenor Auditorium, and a question and answer session with Directory Murray Grigor and Cinematographer Hamid Shams will follow the screening.

Tickets must be purchased in advance!

“Comedian In Chief” Obama Slays at Correspondents’ Dinner

There are plenty of other sites around town that are devoted to coverage of Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, so we won’t make it too much of a habit around here. However, there are some fun moments that are worth talking about thanks to the A-list media types gathered together for the dinner. In case you missed it, the funniest quips weren’t from the featured guest, a certain infamous talk show host by the name of Jay Leno: they came during President Obama’s remarks to the crowd.

Some of the best lines?

“I’m glad to see the only person who’s ratings…fell more than mine is here tonight. Hey good to see you Jay.”

“I hear I am big on Twitter…Facebook….or, as Sarah Palin calls it “Socialized Media.”

According to a few notes from media critics, the zingers were thanks to The Daily Show writers, so let’s not get into a tizzy about taxpayer dollars for comedy scribes. Still, you have to give it to 44 for solid delivery, and, politics aside, its still a funny way to start to the week. Enjoy:

United Fall to Red Bulls

Here are a few difficult statistics for D.C. United fans:

  • Last MLS Goal Scored at Home: October 17, 2009
  • Number of Scoreless Minutes at RFK This Season: 270
  • Consecutive MLS Losses: 5
  • Current Goal Differential: -11

Bleak. Yesterday’s game at RFK, caught by only 12,089 people, was just about the same level of bleak that we’ve seen all season. The only change is the names on the field, but the play remains the same. We saw the return of Simms and Pena after hamstring injuries, the return of Luciano Emilio and the debut of midfielder Stephen King, but it seemed to do no good for United, who just couldn’t turn offensive pressure into goals.

The first half of this game was the same traditional first forty-five: United demonstrates they can control the ball on offense and make turnovers into offensive possessions, but at no point could they get the ball past the keeper. They’re not so much making mistakes as they are not taking the risks associated with mistakes.

The anemic offense, and flat-out mistakes by Troy Perkins in goal, combined to put United at a deficit early in the second half. One goal could’ve been forgiven, a tough deflection into the waiting feet of Ibrahim, but the other, Perkins didn’t even dive for. Not making the effort seems to be a team trait this year so far.

Wednesday night, United takes on the KC Wizards, who curbstomped them in KC during the season opener. Here’s hoping they can come around.

Stephen Strasburg Moving A Little Closer to Majors

Do not adjust your MLB standings, they are reading correctly: the Washington Nationals, over .500, are just a game back of the New York Mets (and 1/2 game behind the Phils) in the National League East. And it’s not April anymore. Up in the majors, the Nats will get their rubber match in the weekend series with Florida later this afternoon, but there’s some equally exciting news down on the farm.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com is reporting that, after this afternoon’s start in Potomac Harrisburg [my bad], #1 prospect/phenom/“Jesus” Stephen Strasburg will be promoted to the Nationals’ Triple-A club in Syracuse. Strasburg’s numbers in Double-A were very impressive, as the young pitcher let just one run cross the plate in 17+ innings of work while striking out 23. While most believed that Strasburg would make his way to the Show sometime in his first season, it may very well be coming soon. One writer’s opinion? An interleague start against the young bats of Baltimore come late June. While, luckily, I don’t the make decisions for the team, I think we can all be optimistic that Stephen will be taking the Navy Yard mound someday soon.
