WaPo guest blogs Monumental

Well, not really. Tom’s second in our ongoing feature on the monuments in our city goes live at 2p today (see the first – about Farragut Square – here), but today’s Washington Post Weekend section contains a story called 10 memorable memorials. They’re some interesting picks, and worth suffering through the bad interface on the website to look at… though only barely. 4 lines at a time, really? More curious than the painful web layout is that the print edition uses different photos for the Kermit and Victims of Communism monuments.

On the other hand, reading it online can allow you to compare some of WaPo’s shots with what’s available on Flickr. Most notable is how different an impression you get from the Post’s close-up shot of the National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism than this wide shot by user kimberlyfaye. I also like Aaron Webb’s shot of George Mason chatting with this fellow, apparently in town for a lumberjack blogger convention. (I kid, Mike – love the tuque! But no matter what, don’t miss andertho’s shot of the Titanic memorial, which puts WaPo’s to shame.

Other quick searches here, here, here, here, and here, plus shots of multiple versions from around the world of the Spitir of Haida Gwaii here.

Wayan Vota on 60 Minutes

Wayan Vota on 60 Minutes

Straight from the WeLoveDC Shameless Promotion Department, I’m leading a workshop on Thursday that should excite marketing managers in the DC nonprofit community:

Get Featured in Mainstream Media (RSVP required)

Learn how to spike your organization’s message with high-impact, low-cost marketing tactics and technologies with Wayan Vota. He’ll share lessons learned that have him on 60 Minutes, NPR, and the Economist only using blogs, emails, and old-fashioned shoe leather.

Your take-away: a ready-made mainstream media publicity plan for your cause.

The discussion is part of OneWorld’s workshop series, free for OneWorld membership, which is just about every major nonprofit in DC, and $50 for everyone else.

“Hottest Media Types” Nominations

Apparently, Media Bistro’s Fishbowl DC is holds an annual contest to determine the “hottest” media types in DC for 2008. Categories include women and men, who work on-air, off-air, and in PR.

I have pretty mixed feelings about contests like this. It all seems a bit bloggers-in-bikinis. That said, as long as they keep things reasonably appropriate and – very important – gender-balanced, I cannot get too upset.

Nominations are currently open. I think We Love DC’s Tom Bridge would be filed under “male, off-air” (not that I am just saying that because he is the boss, or anything…)

Make the bad man stop, mommy

Christ almighty, traveling back and forth to Baltimore on the MARC these last two days (why have a 615 train if it never even shows up till 630?) I thought i’d reached the limit to how much suffering mass transit could heap on me. But no, someone had to leave a copy of the USA Today on the seat I plopped myself down on. Which is how I came to read about how HBO, amongst their other greenlit projects, is going forward with a half hour series based on Cutler’s Washingtonienne novel.

Now, in fairness, I think this makes a lot more sense than creating alternate media based on books like the DaVinci Code, which some people have actually read – this way there’s something new on the screen for people. But how much mileage can you get out of a low-wage worker slacking her way through the day, screwing people indiscriminately, sometimes taking money for it, and failing to live up to one of the most basic tenets of being a whore by not talking about it?

What about Virginian identity?

Obviously we’re focused on DC and the immediate area, but that immediate area includes Northern Virginia. Today’s Kojo Nnamdi show will spend a half hour talking about Virginian identity and have the directory of the Virginia Folklife Program, Jonathan Lohman , as a guest. As you might imagine, we here are interested in issues of regional identity and identification…
