Local running blogger Tom Jones from 528,000 Feet had a pretty nifty idea on how to both raise money and awareness around prostate cancer research. Jones, a Senate Staffer by day, is a long-distance runner and cycler, and like many who participate in long races and marathons, Jones has selected a charity to support through donations and pledges around his quest. Instead of just asking for donations to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, though, he’s upping the ante by offering something very cool in return for your family.

Yes, you read that correctly.   A prostate exam.  Yeah it’s what you think.  Talking about it makes us uncomfortable – maybe a bit squeamish, maybe it even makes you blush, but it’s a deadly serious subject and men – dads in particular – need to be thinking about it.  And that’s where I come in.  For a donation ($100 wouldn’t hurt but any amount is greatly appreciated) to my campaign to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, I will take the bullet for you and bring up the awkward subject with that man in your life.  I’ll offer two options – a heartfelt handwritten note from me letting him know that you’ve asked me to reach out to him and let him know that he needs to head to the doctor and get a prostate exam – or – if you’d prefer, I’d be happy to pick up the phone and call him and discuss with him the importance of getting to the doctor.

Father’s Day was yesterday, and I obviously want to continue to thank my dad and dad’s everywhere as we remember what they’ve done for us. That gratitude should last much longer than a single day, though, and with Jones’s help, maybe you can give your father one more gift that will guarantee his health. Give him a hand and donate here.
